The g man knocked out future heavyweight champion michael moorer in the amature's, only liked to spar heavyweights, manny steward said when evander and mccal were both in the kronk they didnt like sparring g man, steward also said gerald had the power of a super heavyweight, gerald would go as high as 205 when not training and still look ripped! Carlos Monzon Was a freak of nature at middleweight 6 foot 2 with shoulders like a heavyweight, his former trainer Amilcar Brusa once said monzon would knock heavyweights out in sparring and had the power of a heavyweight, Monzon was close to fighting bob foster and then john conteh but both times the wbc and wba refused to let monzon keep his belts if he moved up and monzon would not give them up unless he lost them, there are also stories from new york gyms that when monzon came over to fight tony licata in 1975 he and a past his prime fraizer sparred and monzon had the better of the spar. Former monzon victim nino said monzon was a freak of nature he had never been in with some one so strong! can you imagine monzon would of had day before weigh in? So were monzon and g man natural heavyweights??
In Dempseys day they both would have moved up to HW to make the big money and they both would have They were massive MWs, rangy but strong and had the frames to be very solid all the way upto 210lbs really. Pity Monzon never went upto LHW and GMANs career was cut short
Monzon was actually 5'-11-1/2"..but interestingly enough, gave viewers the impression that he was taller than that, because no one, IMO, really utilized their reach and height quite as effectively as Monzon, so thus, he appeared taller..and he sure fought "tall".
They were both big middleweights, but most defeinitely not "heavyweights in middleweight clothing"..Monzon was ideal at middleweight, and I doubt would have been as successful at lightheavy..same holds true, IMO, for McClellan. Monzon, I have always believed, was the greatest of middleweights...far more than the G-Man of any other 160 pounder of history.
