Yes, but the way the thread unfolded around it was equally amusing.

I'm hoping that Monzon appreciation ends up being like jazz or wine tasting. Maybe when I'm 40, I'll wake up one day and just completely "get it". For now, I just know to respect his run and keep my mouth shut. But damned if he hasn't made me doze off a few times...

Is this because of that thread earlier on who would win if they fought?

I feel Hagler's overrated by the common fan in the same way someone like Joe Louis is. He's really, really well-known among casual fans, and thus tends to find himself inside the top 20 or even top 10 on such ATG lists by the likes ESPN or RING magazine, much the way Louis is frequently top 5 on those lists, when the case for such a thing is pretty much non-existent. And yeah, on this site I feel there's a bit of overrating him too. Nothing terrible really, but like Duran, he's clearly one of the most beloved boxers around here. Monzon's rating in general seems to be pretty spot on, though he's not so well-known by the casual fan.

I can see what you are saying wtih Hagler, but he is one of the top 3 ATG middle weights, and Joe is a top 2 ATG Heavy wieght. So I can't see where they can be overrated at their weight classes but P4P, Hagler can be a little overrated (at times)

It is so hard to make a P4P list, how do you look at the cretriea?

If I did one guys like Rocky would be near the top as I cannot see to many guys his size beating him, does Oscar get ranked really high? six division champ, but was a fair bit bigger than his comp' in the lower weights and drained himself to get an advantage or does a guy like Hagler get ranked high, as he was the middle weight king for a number of years?, did not drain himself to pick up a belt here or there, his comp' was not the best ever, but when you are so dominant others cannot shine and a guy like Mugabi might of done a lot more if he did not run into Hagler.

Not at all... "Monzon and Hagler" are for sure top-5 middles on the ATG list of champs there...

Overrated is like Stan Ketchel, Jake LaMotta and even Mickey Walker... All are also great, but more so top-10; not in the top-5 in my view at 160 pounds...

No...neither man was "overrated" by any stretch of the imagination...they were both MIDDLEWEIGHTS...not lightheavies...MIDDLEWEIGHTS...and were the real masters of their domains. Fighters smart enough to stay put in their ideal weight classes..they were the two best middleweight champion of history.

Right...Monzon was and is still a mystery..or just plain unknown to the "average fight fan"...he may as well have competed 20's insofar as the average fight fan is concerned.

This thread deserves to be punched in the nuts by SNV...who is close friends with Marvin.

...My painting of these two great friends has been featured in Caxapian art galleries.

    Maybe.

But which middleweigts were better? Not many.

And which middleweights could have beaten them? Not many.

I was about to post something similar:yep

I just don't get or see the point or what positive purpose such a thread is meant to achieve, whats the TS looking for? is he confused about something? Such banality & negativity about the status of long reigning undisputed champions of there respected weight classes just amounts to a waste of oxygen. Long reigning undisputed champions such as Monzon & Hagler overated??? There's no comparison worth mentioning & the TS bugged out of making one.

ELITE is ELITE & Undisputed ELITE is simply that..UNDISPUTED for a very good reason as they passed the trial by ordeal again & again & again:deal

    Hagler lost to a Welterweight??

Firstly, Hagler never lost to Leonard.
Secondly, is this the smae Leonard that won a Light-Heavyweight title?

I think you will find Hagler did lose to Leonard but it was at Middleweight
That doesn't make him overrated just not unbeatable
    Same applies for Monzon
