There is no third category. You either love him or you hate him. You can't be neutral. Monzon is king. @Richard M Murrieta this is your home.
I keep looking for a reason to be a Monzon fan ...I haven’t found one yet ...maybe I’ll watch one of his movies
Not sure how uncommon they are @mrkoolkevin and @cross_trainer but I have photos of his dead body... Not kidding. Would you like to make a trade?
He didn’t have an exciting style ...he wasn’t charismatic... he wasn’t involved in any epic battles...and he was almost never the underdog
I think the appeal of Monzon lies in the fact that he was so dominant and a brute outside the ring. Literal murderer with backing from a corrupt government system like a boxing super villain or something.
@cross_trainer I have to wonder. Is it his style or the fact he was just plain terrible outside the ring that doesn't appeal?
I try to steer clear of being a fan of guys that murder their wives/girlfriends but to each their own I suppose.
For the record, everyone has their own opinion, I accept that. I do have my own opinion. I have followed Carlos Monzon since he won the World Middleweight Title from Nino Benvenuti on Nov 7 1970 until his retirement on August 29 1977, when he retired as champion after 14 successful title defenses. Everyone has their favorites, i am cool with that. I do not approve of his treatment of women, I am happily married, 23 years. But I am talking about him as a champion, he was his own man in the ring, never tried to copy another fighter nor was boastful like many after the great Muhammad Ali, there was only one Ali. I appreciate fighters who do their talking with their fists in the ring not their mouths. I admire fighters like Salvador Sanchez and Alexis Arguello for that reason. But at the same time I do accept everyone's right to have their own personal favorites. Carlos won his title, he beat everyone that was put in front of him, he allowed promoters to be promoters, calling other fighters out is like watching WWE Wrestling. For those that admire Eusebio Pedroza for example, he was talented but he was a dirty fighter. Roberto Duran, one punched an opponents mother. In a nutshell, I do not care to dissect what a fighter does outside the ring. Today, there are plenty who do a lot of bad things, I stick to just boxing. Like I have said, I have been watching pro boxing since 1965, i have seen many. I will not engage in worthless debates when there is trash talking about my favorites or those of others, I believe we are a little too old for that. It is about Mutual Respect. I will treat others like I want to be treated, if I am piled on, I will let anyone know in the same way that they piled on me, I do not take it from anyone, not now or ever.
True, but Carlos Monzon only spoke Spanish, I speak the language read and write it too, I understand him. Why should he have to learn English? Why don't others learn Spanish in that case?
