When was it supposed to have happened ? The story is plausible if Frazier was retired/out-of-shape, and Monzon was active and in-shape. Anyway, whether 100% true or 100% bull****, it's irrelevant to their records and demonstrated abilities.
I know that Mailer drunkenly staggered into Liston's post Patterson 1 victory party, and told Sonny that Patterson EXISTENTIALLY actually WON the fight !!! Surreal.
No, but it's been fairly recent..the other Monzon rumor is fairly innocuous..the one about him being 6'-2"..that's one even propagated by an otherwise great boxing writer Mike Casey. The "sparring" rumor dosent fly or make sense based on common sense alone..as I've said, the repercussions of such an event happening would have been enormous, but it dosen't even get that far, because Monzon, as pointed out before, didn't engage in gym wars..he thought it was stupid, and Frazier went all out in sparring, as is typical of Philly fighters. There's no recorded meeting betwen Monzon and any big name American heavyweights. Monzon knew his limits as a fighter which is why he stayed in the 160 weight class.
That was probably one of the most incomprehensible meetings between Sonny Liston and any human being, except possibly for that tv commercial Liston once did with Andy Warhol.
I've never heard of it until fairly recently... Monzon looked that tall because of the contrast with shorter opponents.
Though I am sure if Monzon were born in Victorian times, had a handlebar mustache, rolled his fists in an upright stance a'la Tom Cribb, he would be even odds to beat Frazier...
Well your opinion of Monzon, to be polite...is the same as someone who dosen't like classical music or jazz, and therefore brands it as ****..because he dosen't understand it...but I'm not getting in a pointless argument with you..as my British friends would say "I couldn't be arsed"..so I'll just agree to disagree with you on the merits of Carlos Monzon...save your arguments for someone else, or some other time.
Who said Monzon was 5' 11" if you believe he was that short I have a few bridges youd be interested in... He is clearly taller than Benvenuti and Mundine who were both 5' 11" and he towers over Briscoe and Valdez who were 5' 9"
Yes. But Antuofermo was saying it in 1983, or before, as shown in the opening post on this thread. So, it dates back that far, at least.
