Tell me more about the man but when he was outside of the ring? Heard he was one menacing dude! Any stories on him?
Monzon was known to be very quiet but have a steely arrogance. His longtime trainer said he never lost that tough street kid barrio attitude , he loved to fight in and out of the ring and had a hair-trigger temper.
Here is a good article: http://wander-argentina.com/boxer-carlos-monzon/ Some good quotes: * “I always loved Carlos Monzón. He was a tough guy, for real, a guy from the streets,” Tyson told sports daily Olé. “He didn’t talk much. He didn’t need to. The ring belonged to him,” he said. * Like so many athletes who emerged from tough, violent backgrounds, Carlos Monzón did not have the capacity to fully submit himself to the comfortable life of fame and fortune which he had earned. In his early days as an amateur fighter he often found himself in trouble with the law. He served brief stints in prison for inciting a football riot and brawling. Rumors, often backed up by physical evidence, of abusive behavior towards the women he was romantically involved with pursued him throughout his life. He was shot twice by his first wife in 1973 but recovered to continue his career. * “He drank a lot, and you could say he was a violent drunk,” says the long time El Grafico journalist. “I believe that when he was unable to express himself with words he would respond with violence. The difference in the ring was that it was his work, and he ****yzed all his aggression. He had an extraordinary coldness,” he said.
Another good article: http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2011/1...oxing-champion-and-international-playboy.html Some good quotes: * He was accused of breaking a reporter’s jaw. He was friendly only with the elite of the elite. He had a soft spot for Bennie Briscoe and always greeted his arch-rival with a big smile and firm handshake. He retired undefeated over the last thirteen years of his career. In retirement boredom set in and so did his demons. Caught up in the party lifestyle, it came crashing down when he was convicted of killing his common-law-wife. * “There was an arrogance, even an insolence about Monzon. He carried himself like a winner. I was in the office of the promoter, Rodolfo Sabbatini in Rome with my wife of the time when Monzon strolled in, impeccable in a white suit, bronzed skin, smoking a cigarette, looking as if he had walked in off the set of a Federico Fellini film. “He was a very cool looking guy and obviously a man absolutely full of confidence. He was one of those boxers who entered the ring as if he KNEW he was going to win, just a matter of how he did it.
So it sounds like he was an arrogant, savage thug who got away with a lot of ****ty behavior because everyone had such huge man-crushes on him?
I've read he was a nasty street guy threw much of his life and through much of his early career a pimp. He was violent w women. He did respect other fighters though.
