Busts his man up with the one two. And Cossel makes a wanker of himself (again). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tma-mQp5ARA
Great performance this was against avery good technical fighter. Not as good as the bogs one though. I seem to remember monzon being badly rocked for a second earlier in the fight, when he was trying to finish off bouttier circa the 5th or 6th.
Here is what Mantaquilla is referencing, absolutely brilliant action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EIJrG6DKiE&feature=channel_page
amazing how monzon was able to get everyone reaching with their punches so easily.Definitely one of the best ever at fighting tall. Bouttier had some toughness to fight on for so long after the pasting he took there.
Monzon was so very effective in the way he utilized his reach, and used that basic one-two at stategic times against his opposition. I've said it many times, that IMO, he was the best middleweight ever, and one of the very elite fighters of all time..he's just too hard for the casual, modern day fan to understand adequately.
By the way, thanks for coming up with the film of this fight. It's the first time I've seen it since I watched the actual fight on that Saturday afternoon on Wide World of Sports.
That's Monzon in a nutshell. It's actually very hard (often very counter-intuitive) to fight tall properly. People rarely appreciate the amount of skill necessary to fight like Monzon, even if it was such an ugly style. It's one thing to be dependant on your height, but it's quite another to use height FULLY as an advantage in the way that Monzon did.
Notice how deceptively fast Monzon is at this stage in his career. He showed that against Benvenuti too, who himself is one of the fastest middleweights ever. I think a lot of people who've only seen Monzon's later fights don't realize how all-around fast and skilled he was here at his peak. I never thought he was fully the same after being shot (something people hardly ever mention). I wonder how good he looked in his fights before he won the title?
Monzon was very subtle, and not flashy at all. He is often accused of doing just enough to win a fight, and of being unspectacular, like a Duran or Ali, but to me he was superior to both of them, and many writers in the boxing magazines back in the 70's, during Monzon's reign as champion, would occasionally rank all the reigning champions, and they thought so too. He is still underrated as a defensive fighter, and it's said that 'he was easy to hit"..but that was very deceptive, in that he NEVER got beat up, had just over 100 fights, and was virtually unmarked at the end of his career.
I appreciate Monzon the more i see him,i was like a lot of guys and would think how did he have the success he did.He gets more rythmic the more i see him, those loose looking almost arm looking punches, just the way he kept them coming,he never seemed to get his feet set.He just ground his opponent down.On top of that he was teak tough, strong as an ox with a great chin.He must have been a nightmare.
