Have to say I've been watching a lot of James Toney lately and the man was exceptional. He is pretty under rated at middle because of the loss to Jones but allot of that was drupe to his huge weight loss. How do you feel he does against Monzon. I like Toney.

I think this comes down to whether Monzon can throw Toney out the window before Toney eats him.

Monzon fought three minutes a round. At 160, James was quite inconsistent. I don't think James was even as good as Valdez at that weight.

Monzon's superior jab and reach will be big factor in this fight.

Toney rolls right hands very well. IMO that isn't the whole story...Monzon has this jerky, pecking style...and the jab varies from probing to thudding. Monzon has the versatility to move forward or backward...His style and presence in the ring isn't pretty, and add to the equation height, length and strength...Monzon is a tough out for any middleweight...might be the best middleweight H2H. It's the variation of the jab that gives Toney trouble mostly.
    Monzon UD Toney

Monzon all the way and it's not even close...

Toney would be eating leather all night long..

Monzon had the stamina to fight 15 hard rounds and keep coming, Toney can't, i still can't get the image of Dave Tiberi kicking his lard ass and getting robbed...

I think Toney was far better than anyone Carlos ever fought. It's a very interesting match up.

At middleweight I'll take Monzon by decision. I see Toney resting too much throughout the fight Monzon using his good jab to score points. But a super middleweight fight between the two with Toney on point would be very interesting.

Monzon UD James has his moments. Monzon stayed at 160lbs so this is where the fight would be. James beat the tall Nunn but Monzon would keep James respectfully at bay

Monzon would have the answer for anything Toney tries to do. A methodical chess game with Monzon winning a clear unanimous decision. The jab...the inability of Toney to fluster Monzon and and the Argentinian's superior ring generalship would be the difference.

I don't see Monson to having anywhere near Toney's ring generalship .. I see Toney as better defensively, much faster and having at least as good a chin .. Monzon had serious challenges from an ancient Emile Griffith and I can see Toey making him look foolish and frustrated many times .. that being said Toney was always struggling to make 160 and Monzon may have had the strength and stamina to out punch him over 15 .. not knocking Carlos at all but Toney is ridiculously under rated ..

    Agreed.

James was phenomenal when he was 'on' @ MW. A real joy to watch.

Mythical comparisions only have value when you take the best versions of the fighters at the relevant weight.

For this fight, that would be the Toney of the McCallum I fight!!Your reference to the Tiberi fight goes out the window(Toney was not in shape).

Anyway, I still pick Monzon by close decision.
In my view, Toney was at his best at supermiddleweight.
