I've always felt that it's difficult to come up with a gameplan for Hagler in this one. He's not going to bully Monzon so that leaves him with the thankless task of trying to outbox a guy with the longer frame, a frame that cleverly tilted out of harms way. I suspect Marvin would struggle to get his jab going and be forced to lunge in except the result wouldn't be spaghetti legs, and then it's back to boxing where those 'confused' moments red cobra touched on could haunt him over the distance.
Red I don't think there has EVER been a Middleweight who is going to put Escopeta down for the count. Especially inside 8 rounds. Not even SRR.
judging by his above assessment of Hagler, the guy's very short on ideas. could use a good consultant
maybe for you it'd be hard, but then, you're not Hagler In other words, just bang those ribs till you see red welts!
i can see where you'r coming from but can you believe that some people actually throw around such things as "Hagler would struggle to get his jab going" (why if he's throwing from a southpaw stance?) and the other "marvin will be forced to lunge" to "Hagler will go thru his confused moments that will forever haunt him" Makes you wonder what kind of stuff he writes in his book. needless to say, Spoon probably lacks the kind of needed insight to impart to his readers (from what I've seen) I remember when he first came on here at ESB touting himself, he came on pretty strong. unfortunately, the finished product never could match the hype More of the same (yawn)
Ouch! It's always going to be a close fight but I feel Monzon is going to edge it. No blasphemy in that statement. As to the other, Ted Spoon is just getting warmed up.
you brought it on yourself. I would think that an author on the sport's history would know better Did you not just paint Hagler as an unsure incompetent who for some unknown reason, cant fire his right jab? Why can't he fire his right jab? He just sees a taller opponent in front of him like Hearns or Obel or Monroe and he automatically starts lunging? Now I know you write fiction, especially when you start to imagine things like Marvin going thru his confused moments that will later haunt him so what went wrong in the Hearns fight? according to Ted Spoon logic, Marvin should have been confused enough to drop a 12 round decision
Remember, comments are relative to what Hagler is facing. They are not put-downs. Hagler was at his best when he got you at the end of that jab. Once he did his work flowed. The Hearns fight was well-executed but not his preferred method of fighting. The reason it worked is because he could bully Tommy. It will be hard to do that to Carlos. Both corners would be expecting a distance fight. So Hagler is going to land the jab but sporadically, hence it will be hard to get it going, and I feel the stop n' start kind of fight that it becomes is the one which better favours Monzon's style.
There will be no KO's in this fight, is my observation. Frankly the style matchup probably favours Monzon more than Hagler but if there's a man I would never bet against it would be the Marvellous one. :think I think I hedged my bets well enough there
