two of the best middleweights in history. i think this would be an upgraded version of margo vs. cotto not only in weight but also in class. only here, hagler has a rock solid chin unlike cotto's combined with excellent ring generalship and willingness to brawl. monzon with his roboric relentlessness, chin and strength. who wins?
Monzon was the more complete fighter. Hagler did his best when his opponents came to him and he could counter. Marvin could do everything and was excellent when going forward as well, but he struggled against a washed up lightweight in Duran and lost to Leonard. Also, Hagler always seemed to have problems with jabs. Monzon's was one of the best, he'd keep it in Hagler's face, control him at a distance with his 76' inch reach, tie Marvin up whenever he got on the inside, and take a prett close, but very clear UD.
Monzon was nothing like Margarito except he had a titanium chin and tremendous stamina. Monzon was one of the greatest tacticians ever, one of the absolute best ring generals ever. He'd keep the fight in the center of the ring, hit Hagler coming in, tie him up and push him off, and then do the same.
This is too insane to call and would be great if we had a time portal to make it happen. Prime for Prime I like Monzon. But this could go either way.
Monzon should win. There was a thread a while back where me and Brooklyn did some pretty thorough analysis on this matchup in the Classic Forum and both came to the conclusion that Monzon would win. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64531&highlight=monzon+hagler
i think this goes like margo and cotto with hagler boxing his way in the early goings with monzon catching up to him. by the late rounds, monzon's stamina ups one level and beat hagler to the body and land some debilatating uppercuts. hagler has a great chin however and monson wins by decision.
It wouldn't be Monzon's game to turn it into a brawl or an inside fight, his speciality was fighting on the outside. Your entire analysis relies on basically just upping the Cotto/Margarito fight to MW with completely different fighters. Doesn't work that way.
from what ive seen of monzon on youtube (and it's not much), he seems to be more of a boxer than picks his shots, keeps opponents at a range, then times them coming in. i dont see how hes like margarito who just comes forward throwing nonstop at anything he can hit.
Monzon could fight in the inside an bully his opponents because of his size. he usually uses the jab to keep the fighting from the outside unlike margarito, but monzon and margarito are both good in taking punches either in the body or in the head. whatever you say, cotto did land some body shots to margo but with no effect. margo like monzon was almost robotic in his unrelenting pressure and pretty big for his opponents like monzon who uses his size. both lack great speed and almost look unathletic until you see how their stamina are unusually deep.
