both were the man at their respected times but what a war this would be! who would take the win and why and how?

monzon and this fight would not have been that close... carlos had the tools to handle hagler physically and mentally... he was a big framed mw, he was a natural super mw and hagler was a small mw , he was packed of muscle at 158 pounds, carlos would handle hagler with a basic but effective style of jab jab straight right hand and clinch and he would cut hagler more and more and he would get stopped between the rounds 6-9 by cuts, similar to the fight with hearns, simply carlos would be the stronger man in the ring that night, he would have the chin to survive to hagler, he was patient and he would make his job slowly, he was too tough mentally and physically... carlos monzon is a fish too big for the fishing rod of marvin

This is one of those that I've never been able to form a concrete opinion about. Fascinating match up.

cant say for certain but the odds look to favor the Marvelous one

Hagler was able to deal with much bigger men, like Obel, a natural supermiddle, Monroe, and Hearns and Monzon looks to play right into Hagler's strengths as well.

Now the result: I see Hagler slipping past many of Monzon's slow right hands and battering the ribs while mixing in devestating jabs N hooks which pay off in the later rounds. This leads to a badly exhausted & battered Monzon who goes back to his corner complaining "I don't know how much more of this I can take!"

Hagler, sensing his man is ready to go, revs up his attack in the style of Aaron Pryor, and sets up his final attack in prep for a middle to late rounds tko. Monzon is nearly out on his feet when his corner mercifully throws in the towel

I will go with Monzon in this one. Monzon's size would be a big asset, plus just his style in general. That and Monzon was just such a mean Mofo. Hagler would give him some grief though.

If they fought 10 times Monzon wins 6 or 7.

Curtis, u must admit, Hagler would find Monzon's ribcage an inviting target. that right there is what bothers me about his chances. plus Marvin's jab is a lot harder and faster. I think Marv with his southpaw stance would neutralize Monzon's jab and beat Carlos to the punch

Hagler fought in amateurs at 165 so he is not the small guy some make him out to be, 2 inch height difference between the two, this is a toss up fight

Hagler by decision or even late stoppage. I think he was stronger both mentally and physically. Not saying Monzon was weak in those areas but Marvin Hagler had a special determination that even most champions dont possess.

On the tangible side I think Hagler has enough boxing skills, footwork, two handed power not to mention the ability to switch stances during the fight. He could give Monzon different looks and never let him get comfortable.

One thing people dont realize about Marvin is that he had footwork that would make Sugar Ray Robnson proud in his prime. I see Hagler pushing a faster pace than Carlos would normally allow.

Two great fighters one just a little greater than the other.

I think Hagler's mind set, and strategy in the fight are the key.

Hagler was never hurt bad in a fight (at least he never showed it), while Monzon was badly hurt and almost out against Briscoe. Apples to oranges when it comes to boxing, but I'm a Hagler fan. hehe.

Monzon was too tall, strong, rangy and clever for Hagler. He would have resisted the temptation to slug with Marvin and would have outsmarted his man. This ain't a Tommy Hearns with that fragile chin or a butterfly SRL ,...besides being ice cold, Monzon was a classic, alltime great ring general, and would have frustrated Hagler and tattooed him all night long with jabs, one-twos and the occasional uppercut, just like he did with Briscoe in their rematch....yeah, just like he did with Briscoe,..and I know that Hag was a better fighter than BB, but it wouldn't have made any difference.

I would have to strongly disagree with this. His fight with Mugabi was physically brutal, and both fighters were pissing blood after their 11 round war. Hagler was definitely slowed down enough for Ray Leonard to run-like-a-***** in the fight afterwards.

very well put. U covered all the key factors that would push the odds in Marv's favor.

I also agree, Hagler & Monzon are #s 1 & 2 respectively, and to think, both were active in the division at the same time
