Monzon is a top 10 P4P in my mind, but an old Monzon could not emphatically defeat Rodrigo Valdez. An old Monzon would lose to prime Hopkins. Prime for prime, I don't see how anyone can honestly say one of these fighters dominates. If you feel that Monzon easily wins, please explain how and what flaws you see in prime Hopkins that Monzon takes advantage of.

and also, despite how pointless bringing up the fight with Bustos is to this thread because Monzon had about 40 fights after Bustos and before Benvenuti, it was 3 years after his career began and in about his 30th fight. No, he wasn't near his peak, but he wasn't pubescent either.

I know these things are a bit of fun but could the prime Hopkins have made 160 back in the old weigh-in time frames? Monzon's strength was that he could take his large frame down to that weight and enjoy the physical advantages. My feeling is that judging by today's fighters' methods Monzon could probably have made 154...

Yep, he could. Hopkins weighed in lighter as DLH in their bout for example and their were rumours that Hopkins wanted to move down to 154 to face DLH in the late 90s. Also, if i remember correctly, he never was more than 4 or 6 pounds beyound the mw limit at fightnight and even that not too often. Hopkins never had problems making the weight but at the very end of his reign. When you watch his fights with Taylor and Tarver you see the difference.

Hopkins was a true mw not like some other guys who are around today.

In about half of his 20 defenses, Bernard came under 160lbs. Lighter than Trinidad when they fought, and DLH as well. He'd have no problems making 160 on fight night.

What about Monzon then? Could he have come in lighter with the rule today? And would being 160 on the day in anyway effect Hopkins?

HM, didn´t Monzon have some problems to make weight from time to time. I think i read something lika he had to runa few miles and worked the heavybag shortly before weigh-in to make the weight at a bout. But yeah, i think if he would go for it he could make 154 today.
No, it wouldn´t affect him. Like i said he didn´t came in at fight night much higher and if he had wanted to he could have made 154 which means he would be about 160 at fight night. Don´t see a problem here.

Your last sentence is simply subjective garbage.
It is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility Monzon defeats Hopkins...In fact I'd favor Monzon to do just that (barely)...but it would be a very close tactical fight. Why don't you explain why and how he would emphatically beat him any night of the week(?)....
    Hero worship? :patsch
Hopkins has never received an 'emphatic beating' from anyone in his career.
Hopkins' size overcomes Monzon's usual advantage in height and reach. Defense? Hopkins has the edge here. Footwork? Hopkins. Stamina? Even. Stylistic edge? IMO Monzon. The key would be Monzon's activity with the left jab from distance in a tactical fight. But if there is someone who might take away Monzon's left with angles and counter punching it would be Hopkins. It is a close fight all the way...either way!

This fight ain`t no walk in the park for either man... I see Monzon winning a close SD, but Hopkins woud make him earn it and work for it every round as he will be in there all the way fighting just as hard as Carlos to get the win. I won`t go into the why`s and how`s of who would win as that has been covered in depth by fellow posters who also pick Monzon, all I`ll say is that its gonna be a competitive fight either way, with the last third of the fight likely being the deciding factor in the outcome as whoever wins most of them probably goes on to win a close decision.

I think Hopkins is slightly overated ,and while Monzon's style was not to my taste I beleive he gets the dec here,Hopkins would be a handful for any middle ,but Monzon finds a way to win a close fight that has both men claiming victory at the end.

I`m doing good man, been on vacation since the week before last and got the rest of this week off before I gotta get back to work on Monday.

I haven`t been posting much during that time due to being on vacation for a close to a week and when I got back home I made it a point to find the time to watch some fights everyday from my huge backlog of unwatched dvds which number about 40 or so discs at the moment.

Other than that I`m doing just fine, I drop by esb and chime in once in awhile, but I find myself rarely inclined to take the time and post nowadays, find too many threads and topics redundant and boring so I log out and come back later or another day. But enough about me, how have you been man?
