I want to give Monzon a chance as boxer stylists like Herol Graham and Sumbu Kalambay were able to trouble him,but thinking again, while Monzon could box he's not really defense first, he's using his boxing skills to land precise madness shots, McCallum had a chance.
I'm sure I'm going to be on an island by myself on this one but I don't care. McCallum could hang with anyone at 160. Not saying he is the best mind you but he is a problem for anyone. I actually think he matches up better with Monzon than other former greats at 160. Speed is the way too beat technical guys like McCallum and Toney and I don't think Monzon had that advantage over McCallum.
Monzon by clear decision McCallum was good at Middleweight but he also had some struggles there aswell he lost very one sidedly to Kalambay, very close fight vs Graham, competitive fight vs a green Collins, and Toney damn near knocked him out in the 12th round of their 1st fight. I think Monzon was just more convincing and impressive at Middleweight so he'd be a considerable favourite in my view with his counter punching and power.
Hi Guys. I believe Monzon would win, how or when, by what method I can't say obviously, fighters like Monzon are somewhat a rare breed, of course all ( or most ) will believe they are the best ,it goes with the territory, then there are the Monzons, that have the all consuming faith that they cannot be beaten no matter who the foe is, boxer, puncher, or both, hold no fear for this type of fighter, moreover Monzon had an unbending will, he was implacable, his whole demeanour spoke of a ruthless, spiteful, uncaring fighter, he was a King, and expected his rivals to be fully aware of that when entering his domain, not for him the hurried early KOs, no he prefered to have a close look at the impudent challenger for half a dozen rounds or so, carefully weighing up how much he should exert himself, if the insolent , would be takker of his crown, got carried away, and started to build a lead, started to fancy themself, then like the dominant male Lion, the pretender would be dealt with, the gumshield would feel extra weight, his steel cable like arms, would whirl that little bit faster, with added strength, hard thudding blows, that while they might not knock you out, they hurt you, the stomach punches would cause you to draw deep breaths, and hope the ribs are intact, the head shots stunned you, how long before the round and torture is over your mind is pleading, is it the 8th/9th, it matters not, your only free from the beating, when Carlos or the refs decides you are, the best you can hope for is taking the King into the late rounds, thereby enhancing your reputation, and making the telling of your stand to your grandchildren that little bit more exciting, McCallum beating Monzon could not happen, mere mortals do not beat gods. stay safe guys, chat soon.
Bad style matchup for McCallum. Monzon would establish the distance and negate Mikes need to be in the pocket, rollin going to the body. If Mike starts reaching Monzon countering would also come into play. Mike takes some rounds along the way. Monzon UD 10 - 5
That's what I see happening. Mike throwing those wide looping right hand leads of his to the body. From way on the outside. Wrong guy to do that with.
Monzon by around 9-6 in a purist type fight. He'll be looking to spear him from long range and counter the counters. On another note, would anyone consider McCallum to be the best Monzon faced?
I see potential for it to be wider, but agree that it would be a technical affair. Monzon might well pose the worst kind of style challenge McCallum could ever face. Counterpunchers getting countered is always a bad look, in my opinion, and makes it easy for the judges. McCallum would be lured into making the countermoves that Monzon wants him to. I think the gap in scoring would likely become quite stark. Not sure about McCallum being the best Middleweight Monzon faced. He'd be a consideration, of course - on paper at least - but, other than lasting the distance and, on account of what I suspect would be a fairly straightforward outpointing, he might find himself lower down on the list.
P4P I think I'd rate Napoles (and possibly Griffith though it's closer) higher than McCallum but McCallum was a better MW than Napoles of course. Conversely, Valdez was a better MW than McCallum imo yet McCallum is the better fighter P4P. Otherwise, I think McCallum is clearly of a higher pedigree than the likes of Briscoe, Bouttier, or Benvenuti however.
