Which was the more impressive victory?

Valdez was a level above Mugabi.

When Monzon fought Valdez, Valdez was the next best man in the middleweight division. When Hagler fought Mugabi, there were a few fighters better than Mugabi to say the least.

I'd go for monzon valdez just because of the age monzon was and the fashion he beat him but it's really close to pick which is better

    Definitely Valdez

Hagler was expected to beat Mugabi with ease

Both were great wins, but for different reasons.

We basically watched Hagler grow old overnight and have to dig deep, in order to get a handle on a young, tough and ambitious opponent. It was an unexpected challenge but, either way, in my opinion, Hagler showed his class and character here.

Monzon's performances against Valdes have become nothing short of superb viewing for me. He was older than Hagler (though less ring-worn, in my opinion) and still making things look easy.

I wonder how many other boxers finished their career on a note as high as Monzon did.

Valdez easily! Mugabi really never accomplished anything at 160. His claim to fame is basically this losing effort.

Didn't meet the expectation did it, Mugabi aged Hagler in that fight and Marvin looked like he'd been in a bad car wreck at the fights end

I think that John Mugabi would have beaten a lot of those middleweights

But he never did. Every time he stepped up he lost.

That was after the Hagler fight and after he suffered a broken eye socket in a jr. middleweight title fight. he was never the same.

I've never bought into all that. He was a bee's prong off being KO'd by James Green.

Hagler was never the same after the Hearns war but he'd had many wars and fights by the time that was said and done.

That's probably true, but he was certainly not better than a few others, like Hearns, McCallum, and Barkley. Definitely some others I failed to mention.
