Jones was a great fighter at the weight H2H. Him not staying there long and building a legacy there, doesn't mean he can't beat a fighter who spent his entire career there. Jones rates very high for me h2h, and not as high in a reigning division champion for years way. I just don't see Monzon having any real physically advantages over Jones, nor any stylistic ones. Which is why I think he beats him. Who stayed in the division longer doesn't factor as much for me.
Means nothing here. If the question was ‘Who was the greater middleweight’ Monzon would make my top 5, Jones wouldn’t make my top 50.
The original premise of some people in this thread is that Monzon would easily beat Roy at MW. To which I and others disagreed with, and how that particular side topic got started. It goes towards the question of is Monzon overrated or underrated. As I said, if people believe Monzon easily beats Jones, than that is an example of them overrating him.
True. It's unlikely that anyone "easily" beats Jones. It makes sense to make Monzon the favourite though.
And you are on the flip side of this Kurupt … It's actually probably equal where posters think one would dominate the other which I feel is a small minority anyway given so many discussions on this already … It is a close fight for me..I think we are finding the differences more in the poster's importance and emphasis on " eye test " vs. battle tested, so to speak …. Anyway, that's how I see it
You're right, it comes down to what you value more when deciding who you think would win. It's pretty subjective really, so it can make for some wild predictions as we've seen on this forum.
Who feels that he's overrated? Gil Clancy seemed to think so, once saying he'd never seen more gift decisions in his life, but then again he was Griffith's trainer and no friend to Monzon.
It's impossible that anyone beats prime Jones easily and it's also impossible that any MW in history beats prime Monzon easily.
