Head to head, if I had money on the line, I'd pick Monzon over SRR, Hagler, Hopkins and Jones in 15 rounders. Monzon was a huge and strong middleweight. He tended to wear down even the most cute and slick fighters. I don't think he would be content with a pecking and posing contest with Roy. He would slowly increase the rate and pressure and fireworks would ensue. I am not going to say he would certainly win, just that the odds would push me to him.

    Interesting post Red Cobra.

I am also intrigued by Monzons somewhat slack approach to out-of-the-ring lifestyle choices, amazing he had the success and longevity he did have.

The guy was a weapon, no doubt about it - I think it is hard to over rate him.

I am also interested in the contrast between Monzon and Duran. Both men were supreme competitors.

I wonder what is better though: cold, machine-like and calculating versus ferocious, savage and boiing hot?! The two men form great case studies for boxing psychology...

He would destroy Roy. Would take him out in about 14 rounds. You wouldn't see Michael B. Jordan calling out Carlos, that's for sure.

Not overrated in terms of his skills but his resume doesn’t hold up to many so-called MW greats, or many ATGs for that matter.

All his best names were past it or already on the downside due to other factors, and the rest of the crop he faced were average compared to other MW eras.

Makes me laugh when I see him ranked no.1. He’s the hipsters choice IMO.

No, Harry Greb is the ultimate hipster choice for no. 1 at MW.

He's probably not the #1 middleweight ever.
    His resume doesn't stack up.

It's better than Hopkins MW resume that's for sure.

I'd have him below Greb, and possibly Burley. Right up there, though.

Monzon to me boxes a bit like a mix of both Klitschko brothers.

He has the herky jerky upper body/reflexive defensive movement Vitali had, and the patient, range establishing jab-based bombing Wlad utilised.

And a lot of people hated watching them so I can see why Monzon ain’t too pleasingto the eye. But I really enjoy watching him, he was a master general.

I always felt Hagler would beat him strictly head to head though Monzon probably deserves the higher ranking.

I’d consider Monzon around #3 behind Greb and Robinson off the top of my head.
