Monzon could stalk you and beat you down like a nail, or he could outbox you like he did to Valdez and Briscoe. When he was in boxer mode he was a punching machine. Wasn't the prettiest, but the guy could do it all
Good...It'll drop your boxing IQ a good 10 points...you'll soon be consulting boxing video games as "serious research" and making calls like "Ricky Hatton beats Jose Napoles"....
Not overrated...just the opposite...he's underrated by those who mistake flashiness for solid, cold blooded effectiveness. I have considered him the best middleweight champion of all, but for those who place a premium on division hopping, then he must fall short to them. Don't understand that line of thinking...as if his record doesn't speak for itself. And that's all I have to say about Carlos Monzon...over the years, I've said it all in many a debate in this forum.
It gets pointless after a while. Truthfully, I don't care what guys like him and the red roosters think anymore.
SRR is no. 1 for me and I can make a strong case for him. What I can't do as well is make the case against Greb so I bow to your superior knowledge in that regard, my man.
Hagler had the tools and physical ability to make it at least an even fight from a mechanical standpoint, but I worry about his sometimes questionable ring-generalship and overall intelligence in a fight with an intelligent, cerebral fighter like Monzon.
Hagler would be best making it a scrap and jumping on Monzon early while he’s getting into a rhythm. He wouldn’t stop him early but he’d bank rounds and as Briscoe and Valdez stung Monzon I have no doubt Hagler could too. Hagler would have to nick rounds late after Monzon established the range and got his jab going. But Marv had the chin to take Monzon’s right hand IMO, so he’d be able to stay in there. Hard fight to gauge.
I have them at 4 and 5, not quite decided which order yet. But I prefer Hagler....marginally. Him losing to Ray Leonard is an issue for me though.
I don't see how any case can be made for Robinson as best 160 pounder. He's supremely overrated at the weight.
He has a great resume at 160. Wins (some multiple) over : LaMotta Villemain Abrams Belloise Olson Mims Graziano Basora Castellani Turpin Fullmer etc.
