He...Monzon, was never suited for the light heavyweight division...at least he had the sense...the wisdom (in his professional boxing life, anyway) to not tamper with success....the same can be said for Hagler as well.

Same could be said for career middleweight, 5' 7" Africa's greatest Tiger. However that didn't prevent him from daring to move up at an advanced age and win the undisputed lightheavy title. Not forgetting he had beaten reigning middle champ, Nino Benvenuti, 18 months earlier than Carlos did in Rome.

Maybe Tiger should have striven mightily for a rematch with Bob Foster then, eh?

And you bring up a good point when Griffith is laughably brought up to diminish Monzon's record by some saying he was just a blown up light weight, when he was an ESTABLISHED MW who fought there for years, beat the powerful Tiger for the title and then defending it twice against Archer, then lost it and got it back .. And what did Tiger do after the Griffith loss? He WENT UP and WON the LHW title and continued to defend it … So please tell again how Griffith is a nobody on Monzon's record

Monzon had excellent size, was tireless, had an exceptional chin, killer instinct, major ring intelligence, tricky defense, good enough power and was supremely confident. He’s got to be mid top ten at the least.

My point is that are a lot of guys who could stay in one division and rack up title defenses ....but they usually go up in weight for bigger challenges and bigger paydays ...don't you agree?

I agree with all of this ...and if you call him the best ever at middleweight , you wont get too much of a rebuttal from me

Did you watch the stoppage? The ref had no choice its true but it wasn't because Emile was being hit, his legs cramped and he couldn't move, though bent over Monzon threw but didn't land a punch. Carlos was going to win but it was unimpressive and Emile was not the fighter he had been, the rematch was closer with Griffith landing cleanly throughout and without the speed he once had.

IMO, people that have him no. 1 are slightly overrating him. But if you don't have him in your top 4, you're underrating him. That's just my view. I have a few over him in h2h fights.

With all due respect, many on board (young and maybe a tad old) don't see the boxing scene in previous years from what it has now become. Point: Monzon (and Valdez too) labored in SA for Years before getting their opportunities. Carlos wasn't too far from 30 when he started dismantling everyone they put in front of him!
IMO? No MW EVER is going to stop this machine. IMO Hagler would not beat him. The greatest fighter EVER SRR would not beat him (Ray was battle worn and aging in his late-50's exciting career at middle). I'll even say a Valdez-Hagler would have been a war; maybe even a blood-bath given their penchants for cutting.
Just don't see any middle (eras even considered) that could best King Carlos.

I think he's a bit overrated. There's a virtual love affair many fans have with him. Some even said that he batters Hagler, whilst Hagler has never suffered a beating. MW RJJ is not a give me for Monzon either as some are saying. These two examples also shows how he can be overrated. How can you emphatically state that Monzon dominates Hagler when no one never came close to doing that?

People saying Monzon beats Roy at MW convincingly and are sure of it, is exactly where the overrating comes from.
