This isn't a great fight, but it's such a thrill to see these two genuine greats of the era in with one another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmBHz6vDwuA First and foremost, what is your take on the KO? How do you see it? Bivins looks hellishly strong in these clinches. How do you think Rocky would have matched up to him strength wise? Actually, you think Bivins could beat Marciano? Nice adjustment by Moore, he's leaning much more heavily on a successful jab by the end of the fight.
What year is that from ? Looks very old. The KO is very strange i thought he just fell over or was sort of half pulled by the arm. Can't tell if there was even a punch in there, just expected him to get straight back up. Looked exhausted though. What you think?
This was in 1951. There is an uppercut right before Bivins slides onto Moore, a really sneaky punch, but Bivins has a chin. I can't decide. Most likely the damage was done in the fall, and Archie does help him on his way a bit!
Was it the jab that knocked him down ? The camera changes angle as he starts to go, makes it hard to see exactly what went on there. I like the fight though, this Bivins chap does indeed seem like a tough ****er. Him and Marciano never fight then ?
There's a jab at 9.44 and an uppercut at 9.45. The uppercut may not actually land! But the fight was stopped because Bivins could not see out of his left eye - I wonder if he thumbed him with the jab, accidently, on purpose or accidently on purpose? Bivins and Rocky never met. Bivins fought almost everyone else though, and held decisions over both the HW and LHW champ at the time of this fight with Moore.
I think this is a past prime Bivins McGrain. The post-Walcott/Charles losses especially the Charles KO loss saw Bivins deteriate. Bivins at his best had a massive winning streak and wins over Moore/Charles/Burley/Marshall and an SD loss to Walcott but he'd never get those type of wins again. Its very safe to say Moore got a softened up Bivins, still a very good series of wins though That being said it was a very nice technically performance by Moore, opening him up and controlling him with the jab, nicely timed lead left hooks and straight rights that he seemingly couldn't miss with, that combined with the workrate made it a bad beating. Bivins took an awful amount of shots but I think it puts Moore's 1 shot power in perspective too, very good but certainly not great. Stylistically Moore slopes in with the lead right similarly to Burley and I believe Moore based his style on Burley but Burley to be a better P4P version of that style. The lead left hooks are set up and thrown in a similar to way RJJ but much much slower Moore was very slow for an elite and there are clear openings in his defense, its evident to me why he lost when he fought faster types like Patterson, Charles, Burley and had some brutal KO losses of his own.
I'd assume its either the eye closed from a sustained beating or the corner new he'd be ko'd the next round so pulled him out I think a left uppercut floored Bivins but that was just the straw that broke the camels back and the shots before that had him reeling
