To Moore's claim that he got screwed to some degree by the refs count when he floored Marciano?

What I heard was that it wasn't supposed to be a mandatory eight-count in that fight, but that the ref gave Marciano one anyway. Don't think it would have changed the outcome in any case, though. But I haven't seen it, so what do I know?

I beleive this one for years. I even "re-remembered" the fight.

No, there's no truth in it.

Was there supposed to be a mandatory 8 count or not? I think Rocky got up well before 8, and continued to win. The ref seemes fair, however if Rocky got a break after he got up, ( which I do not recall ) Moore has a legit reason to be upset.

The story in this fight is Moore gassed early mostly from Rocky's pressure and punches. Moore went down a few times. Moore should have moved and used his jab more often, but didn't.

Mendoza, I disagree with you. I think that Archie's plan was perfect (and let's not forget he dumped Rocky).

Moore was after the early KO. The reason was, he knew he couldn't match Marciano's pace at his age - Moore may actually have been near his peak, but he certainly wasn't at his physical peak, or anything like it.

Basically, if Moore had adopted a more "stick and move" style plan, he'd have run out of gas and been destroyed (which is pretty much what happened anyway).

    But he had his moment.

So you're saying that Moore basically had no chance to win this fight, given that the perfect gameplan for him failed anyway.

Moore never complained about that count in the Marciano fight, he complained that that he saw marciano glassy-eyed ready to be knocked out and then the ref snapped his gloves down which woke him up out of his dazed state.

No, that was just one of the embellishments he put in there as the tale grew taller.

Russell, you really ought to just watch the film of this fight. The topic doesn't need a thread. It's right there on the tape; Marciano gets up at "2," the break after the knockdown is no longer than a typical one, he doesn't wobble, clinch, or cover-up, and he wins the rest of the round.
