Toney didn't have many fights at 175..what makes you think this is a 50-50 fight? Moore fought just like Toney except he was a much greater puncher and finisher..same defense shoulder roll movement. Moore the far bigger puncher
Also, Toney just wasn't busy enough. He actually lost to the mediocre Drake Thadzi at this weight. He also lost to Montel Griffin. The fact is he could be outworked and Moore would do it if they fought.
I couldn't care less how big a puncher Moore was, or for that matter how big a puncher you think he was. Toney had a chin that compares with the best, and he was no slouch at any weight, when he bothered to get in condition. It is solely down to how motivated Toney gets, and for Moore I believe he would make the effort.
Everybody that watched the Tiberi fight and decided to jump on Toney and 'outwork' him got beat up. And if you think Archie Moore would approach a fight with 'just keep punching' as a plan, you bumped your head.
Toney couldn't even beat Griffin at LHW, what the hell is he going to do with Archie Moore. Moore beats him up with accurate power shots in combination, Toney has no answer, loses 8-4 at best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Vvp79hZlQE
I agree. By outworking, I don't mean Moore will carelessy attack and get countered. I think it would be a very strategic fight. It will be close, but Toney just won't do enough.
I love old Archie in this. Those Toney tricks are not going to work on this guy. And the Toney footwork is not enough against this opponent either. I think Archie goes to the body here. And after absorbing, James will go into a 1 at a time counter type fight that won't work or land. But it will keep him in the bout--without taking a risk--to drop a lopsided decision. Harold Johnson would be another horrible match for James at 175.
Agree with this. Toney is old school and stands out in the modern era because those old school types are rare these days - Moore stood out in an era when these type of fighters - those who knew the wrinkles - were much more common place. I think Moore was a small level above Toney - top 2 or 3 ATG at LHW - James doesn't hit that mark for me. I like Moore in a UD in this but I wouldn't be surprised if he stopped Toney, Toney's chin is very good and his defence very good too but Moore would stand a chance of unlocking the defence and testing that chin. A man who could floor and stun Rocky Marciano is clearly capable of doing the same to Toney.
And Moore was KO'd in a round by 14 fight Morrow, also KD'd 6 times by Bivins before the last one kept him there. This after being given a 5 minute reprieve in the second round for a blow taken when he was on one knee. So what? All it shows is James' chin is far better than Moore's was.
