Mexican star Erik Morales, the former three-division champion, will face powerful Lucas Matthysse of Argentina on the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz HBO PPV undercard Sept. 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, promoter Golden Boy announced Wednesday.

The pay-per-view will take place at two sites. Besides the Las Vegas portion of the show -- which will include the Mayweather-Ortiz welterweight title bout, Morales-Matthysse and Vargas-Lopez -- junior middleweight titlist Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KOs) will make his second defense against former "Contender" star Alfonso Gomez (23-4-2, 12 KOs) at the Staples Center.

After two live pay-per-view fights from the MGM Grand, the telecast will shift to Staples Center for Alvarez-Gomez before returning to Las Vegas for Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) to challenge Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs).

On paper, this is a pretty good undercard. Hopefully the fights turn out as good as they look.

this might be more entertaining than the main event.

They better figure out how fans from both venues will be able to see the other fight that's going to be televised.

i dont see why not, i think the fights will be good off paper just as good as on. i mean you know how lucas is going to bring it to morales and you know how erik will respond. so thats going to be a war ! saul should stop gomez no later then 4 or 5 rds i think, 6rd at the most.so that should be a nice mid rd at the latest ko win for saul. vargas vs lopez should bo a decent fight as well, i might be smokiing during that fiight. not even going to mention mayweather ortiz fight, well i guess i just did :!::bbb

Like I said before, this card will break PPV records. Mayweather is a big draw, Ortiz has his following, Canelo has pretty much all the Mexicans behind him plus all the fans from other countries, Morales is a freaking legend and has a major following. Vargas is a promising fighter whom many are keeping an eye on. Add all that together plus the fact that it is on Mexican Indepence Day weekend and you have yourself a new PPV record. Great job Golden Boy.

I was sick of hearing how Barrios didnt deserve the title shot, now we have 2 guys that do deserve a shot... hopefully Morales can give 1 last miraculous performance & become what he was already robbed of becoming when he fought David Diaz - the 1st Mexican to win a major title in 4 weights.

Erik Morales deserves to stand alone in Mexican history IMO, not as the greatest or best which go to Chavez & Sanchez likely but because of his uniqueness, the way he is & the way he has performed in the majority of his fights.... the words excitement, heart, pride & warrior all come to mind when you think of Morales... a true fighter !

C`mon Morales... lets fkn do this **** :bbb
