    WBC to sanction Morales-Barrios?

Report and photo by Pepe Rodriguez / WBC
Today at the WBC headquarters in Mexico City, Erik Morales visited president Jose Sulaiman and they spoke about Golden Boy’s request to sanction Erik “El Terrible” Morales vs. Jorge “The Hyena” Barrios for the absolute WBC super lightweight title. Because Timothy Bradley has more than 6 months of inactivity in the ring and Devon Alexander announced that he’ll go up to the welterweight division, the WBC sent a request to the Board of Governors, based on the rule that says: “a former champion has the right to contest the title,” to authorize Barrios against Morales for the super lightweight absolute title.
“I have made many changes in my life to return to boxing. I showed Maidana there is something called school and if you do good, technique is above all,” said Morales. He added, “this is a great opportunity, I’m on the right track, next year we’ll face the best in the world. I feel fully experienced strong and young.”
“Timothy Bradley will be a champion in recess, and most likely will rise to the welterweight division,” said Sulaiman.

    Morales vs Barrios?

    By Gabriel F. Cordero

Sources inform on the possibility that legendary former world champion Erik “Terrible” Morales could face former world champion Jorge “La Hiena” Barrios on September 17 in Las Vegas and that the fight could be for a title at super lightweight. In the coming days Morales will begin his training camp at the Otomi Ceremonial Center in the Mexico State. Barrios and Morales were originally to meet in December but due to a legal situation, Barrios could not travel to Mexico. Barrios recently won a legal opportunity to get out of Argentina. Barrios was originally slated to fight Friday in Tucuman, Argentina.

If this fight comes off for the Ortiz vs Mayweather undercard and they get Johnny Gonzalez vs Elio Rojas too then this would be one of the best PPV's in a while at least on paper. Hopefully everything comes off good this would be great for boxing with all these potential great fights that could make for a lot of action and with all the casual fans that are probably going to buy this fight just off a Mayweather's name it could def give boxing a nice boast.

The fact that this fight could actually be for a title is bull**** though and shows how crooked Suliman is but whatever thats a whole other topic but that cant ruin a good fight and the fact that there could be 4 title fights on one card all of which are good match ups that could make for big action is def needed.

Let's face it, bradley is moving up in weight and wants nothing to do with khan.

Maidana is the consensus next best and morales beat him in my eyes.

Realistically it should be morales v maidana again because barrios has done nothing.

However it makes a khan-morales fight more meaningful.

The 140 division has gone to pot lately. The number 1 won't fight the best, alexander keeps getting gift decisions, matthyse gets robbed, kot gone inactive, maidana has climbed up the rankings without looking impressive since beating ortiz, morale gets robbed as he did vs diaz.

What was once a strong division is almost cleaned out now. Anything that gets all the belts with one man is fine by me. I just don't get why barrios.

Khan prob gonna unify with morales, defend against winner of prescot-paul and then move up.

Coming off a good showing vs Maidana, I can live with Morales getting a title shot......but against Jorge Barrios?

    ......are you kidding me?

What significance is there in crowning yourself a 4 division champ if it comes against a handpicked fighter not deserving even of a top 25 ranking in that division.
The whole thing is a sham and a slap in the face to every Mexican who's attempted to win titles in 4 different weight classes against legit champions.

Floyd, Ortiz, Canelo, and Morales, this will really be STAR POWER. Don't be surprised if this card breaks PPV and other records. It will be a great Mexican Independence weekend.

I like this match up and its a lot better than the Morales-Carolla match up. Both guys are past their primes but they match up well and this fight almost can't help but be fun. This match up makes the card go from ok to good-Mayweather-Ortiz is a very interesting fight, Alvarez-Gomez should be fun even if one-sided, and now Morales-Barrios might be the most entertaining fight of the night. I hope this fight comes off, it really improves the whole card.

lol it won't break floyd/oscar fight that did 2.4 ppv buys. only floyd/manny fight can break that.

i think floyd/ortiz gets between 1.3-1.6 mill ppv buys.

As a stay busy fight thats okay, but for a title?:huh Erik does deserve a shot after his performance with Maidana, but I dont see him beating Khan or Bradley the only elite I see him beating is Maidana. Would rather see a rematch with Maidana and the winner face Khan. A Marquez Morales fight would be nice, about 10yrs late, but theyd sellout in Mexico.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz for WBC 147
Saul Alvarez vs. Alfonso Gomez for WBC 154
Erik Morales vs. Jorge Barrios for WBC 140
    Jessie Vargas vs. TBA
Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Elio Rojas for WBC 126

A pretty sweet card so far. Gonna be a great live event, even if Alvarez/Gomez is split site...
