the fight with raheem was unmotivated, he did'nt even made the 135 weight limit, jesus that was like guzman on his way up to lightweight. and morales was still clearly the stronger puncher between him and raheem, raheem scores because of slickness which a bloated morales couldn't catch and avoid.
even at that stage, if morales trained properly he could beat raheem, even at lightweight. but all cards were stacked against morales, he was coming from a war against pac, he was stepping up to lightweight for the first time, he has all people around him telling him he's the best in the world after he beat pac and that went inside his head, he neglected training and didn't even make weight. when he's focused, he made weight at 130 for the pac rematch and did well during the early goings. its just that pac had changed his strategy and used more control in his punching. had he fought morales the same way he did in the first fight, morales would have won the fight again hence, people would have praised him for another masterful display of boxing.
You also have to think about how much wars he has been in. Cleary the ones with Barrera were brutal. He also had tough fights with Zaragoza and several others before he even got his first world title. All those types of wars slows your body down and it makes it tougher for you to train. Now I give Pacquiao credit for making his adjustments like you said in the second fight but if you think Morales was in his prime when he faced Pacquiao you are clearly wrong.
morales wasn't in his prime but he wasn't shot either. like i said, it's like roberto duran who was past his physical prime when he left the lightweight division but still capable of enduring wars and giving terrific performances like when he fought hagler and barkley. morales was in that same situation, not prime but isn't shot either. what made him shot was after his rematch with pac where he was TKO'd. heck even after that he outboxed diaz better than armando sta. cruz did. pac today isn't in his physical prime either, compare him to his heydays at 122 and 126 or his three round drubbing of morales and you'll see the difference, he's not even punching with enough leverage now and is throwing mostly arm punches, but he isn't shot either.
Skills were clearly diminishing though. He wasnt has fast and quick on his feet like when he was in his prime.
but this is intotal contrast to those who would picture that morales was already shot when he and pac met. morales still ahd a lot to give.
this video shows erik in some great matchups ,thanks for the vid it also shows barerra catching erik coming in and hurting him backing up which is the exact way manny fights with manny having the edge due to his natural power out of all those fighters kelley, zaragoza, chavez, none were in pacs level besides barerra
on the 2nd fight? morales is past prime... but you can't consider him as shot... prime pac and prime pac (who wins) is still up to debate.. but saying em is shot on the 2nd fight discredits pac's win...
love you mex legend.. you are one of the few objective mex posters in this forum i would say.. thanks..
But a motivated and younger Morales would've been fighting a weight class or two below 135. It's doubtful they could ever have even met earlier than they did.
He sure had legs when he beat PAC the first time....and even in the rematch where he got KO'd he looked outstanding in the intial 3 rounds...PAC just started to get his rythm and timing down and EM began to feel the punches more, which he stated.....actually he may have said that after the rubber match. But EM definitly wasn't physically prime for the last two fights wth PAC, but he wasn't shot either.
A 130lb Morales obviously isnt gonna be as fast as a 122 Morales. same as how a 135 Morales isnt gonna be as fast as a 130 Morales. Morales in the 2nd fight was still an elite p4p fighter who was favoured by most here claiming him to be shot. Nuff said.
