This is really bad - not sure if it's been posted before - but sure seems rough - hopefully somebody, anybody can help him out?? Crazy how quickly some can fall off the radar, damn it's a fickle world we live in

I think he has already helped himself out from what I understand.

Lockridge is one of the very good fighters I regularly watched growing up. I don't ever want to see a fighter doing bad. Hope he makes it out of the dumps.

His fights with Roger Mayweather, Eusebio Pedroza, and Julio Cesar Chavez are distant memories. Sadly, the casual audience knows Rocky Lockridge for something completely different from boxing:

Shortly after this segment Lockridge entered rehab. I hear he's doing much better

    best cry ever.
anyone who finds that funny is ignorant. its just dawned on the man how much hurt he's put his loved one's through for years. here's a man, who's soared to greater hights than 99% of the people watching this on youtube, who's now fallen into despair and desperation. think about that.

Very sad, indeed. His epic with Tiger Lopez is one of my favourite fights. And my ole man was meant to be attendance when he broke Barry Michael's heart in the Blazers night club but there was a bomb scare in the arena. Very good and exiciting fighter was Rocky Lockridge. The problem was in the 80's and early 90's crack was treated like candy. This could easy be a number of other fighters from that era, Leonard, Whitaker etc.

From an exciting respected world champion, to a bum on the streets, to the guy ridiculed by tens of millions of kids online. Brutal.

  13. Why should anyone help him? He had it all and threw it away and became a crack head, he deserves **** all from anyone, let alone pity. Let him rot.

I went over Duva's house at 7:45 AM, because we wanted to leave by 8 AM. Cutman Darren Antola called and stated that he was stuck in traffic so we waited for him. We didn't leave until after 8:30 AM.

The traffic was really bad in the beginning and the Garden State Parkway was a parking lot for several miles, but when it did break out a little I put my foot to the floor and when over to the New Jersey Turnpike.

100 miles later we reached the Church at 10:30 AM, so we had to sit in the back, as the service started at 10 AM. There were a couple of speakers, including Rocky. Rocky broke down a little but he was alright. Reggie Haines who brought Rocky, saw Duva sitting in the back and went over to tell Rocky.

Near the end of the service Rocky walked back to Duva and he gave both of us a hug. They talked for a few seconds then they parted. At that time everyone formed a line to say our last good-bys to George Benton.

Here's what Reggie Haines put out:

    Good Afternoon My Friends,

Yesterday was a sad day in the long history of pugilism surrounding The City of Brotherly Love. At Christ the King church in North Philadelphia one of the greatest boxers and trainers of all time was laid to rest. George Allan Benton was given the final 10count as the last round ended. The sound of that bell ringing brought memories of a job well done. His many fights with Rubin Hurricane Carter, Joey Giordello, and Jimmie Ellis came to mind. All the young students who he taught the skill of boxing like Rocky Lockridge, Pernell Whtaker, Evander Holyfield, and Johnny Bumphus. He was affectionately known as The Professor because he seem to know it all.

He used to say I can teach you everything about boxing but heart. He was wrong about that because he taught so many of us young Philly kids real heart. He spoke as a gentleman and emphasized manners and respect. He once gave me a lecture about staying out of gangs and going to school that help mold my life. I first met Mr. George at the 23rd PAL on 22nd and Columbia Avenue in 1969. I was a 14 year old kid on my way to juvenile jail or worse. He took the time to tell me to keep my chin down, my head up, and think about the later rounds in life. He said you can win early but you learn more when you win later. He was talking about boxing and life at the same time.

Mr. George trained many World Champions but he was most proud of us local kids whom he shared his wisdom. Guys like Buster Drayton, Earl Hardgrove. Kevin Howard, Meldrick Taylor ,Simon Carr, and Jeff Chandler.

The church that held his funeral was full of Boxing Legends. Former New Jersey Comissioner Larry Hazzard and Henry Hasup of The New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame were in attendance. Trainer and promoter Lou Duva and Russell Peltz. Joe Disantos, former Heavyweight contender Kirk Johnson came all the way from Canada. Only three people were allowed to speak about George and I was blessed to be one of them. It was an honor to escort my friend Rocky Lockridge to the microphone and to speak after he became overwhelmed with emotion. I called Rocky personally last week to inform him of George’s passing and he sobbed on the phone for minutes. He said when he signed with Top Rank as a kid from Tacoma, Washington they put him in the care of Mr. George who taught him how to be a man and act “Philly like”. He said those qualities have helped him overcome the adversity, substance abuse, and pain. Rocky said Mr, George taught him how to act when he won the title from Roger Mayweather, His controversial draw with Eusebio Pedroza in Panama, the terrible injustice against Wifredo Gomez in Porto Rico, and his 15 round split decision with Julio Cesar Chavez. Mr. George didn’t tolerate cussing in the post fight interview like fighters of today. You said we win like a man and loose like a man.

The passing of Gorge Benton a few months after Bennie Briscoe is fitting because they were close buddies. They represented what a philly left hook is all about, what getting up when you get knock down is all about, and what being a good family man, a good citizen, and what a GOD fearing man is all about. Good bye Mr. George Allan Benton until we meet again and I hope I have you in my corner.

I would rather spend an afternoon with Rocky Lockridge than spend one minute with your dumb ass...:thumbsup I guess you have no sympathy for Kurt Cobain also or are you using his avatar as a way of demeaning him?
