Frank Warren had a 2 page segment slating tonight's JC v Roy bout in today's 'The Sun'. The usual bitterness about how he could have gotten Joe more money and into USA earlier. Why do they give this guy so many column inches when he onbviously has an agenda?
can't find link but here is a couple paragraphs... "Calzaghe seemed to make a couple of naive mistakes when he negotiated the deal, but the most glaring was offering Jones a 50-50 split and throwing the UK TV rights into the pot" "No wonder Jones has been so nice to him in the build up - he can't believe his luck. Calzaghe held all the cards after beating Bernard Hopkins, while Jones, whatever Joe - wearing his new promoter's hat - is now saying, is washed up."
But if he could have got Joe into US earlier then why did he take Hatton and Kahn etc. down the exact same career path.
In summary: Frank Warran talking about being able to get Joe more money in this fight. He's missed one major factor though, it must have easily been worth it to take a smaller pay day to ensure that Frank Warren gets absolutely **** all out of it.
The article for once in Warrens life is spot on and fair, so Ii dont understand what you are saying. All the things he said are true in that article.
TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE Sorry, Warrens a twat but he is spot on in this article, theres no denying it. He may be bitter but he's right. calzaghe has never truly went that next step out of the ring his ability deserves.
"I always thought Calzaghe’s last fight should have been against Pavlik, a young, unbeaten, big-punching “name” who Joe would have taken to school, just like Hopkins did. It would have generated more money than this fight, and wouldn’t have been perceived as a testimonial for two aging fighters looking to boost their pensions" To be honest, I always thought the Jones fight would generate the most money. Recognised name compared to Pavlik and also in hindsight, I think Jones would be the trickier fight. Joe wouldn't have gotten the credit for schooling Kelly. "I don’t call getting the MBE and a CBE, being BBC Sports Personality of the Year, entering the record books after reigning as world champion for more than a decade and banking over £16m “a lack of recognition” or not being “a multi-millionaire”. I even “earned” him another £2.7m by declining my management fee for all but one of his fights." Being a multi-millionaire should be a given after being a world champ for over 10years. Any promoter could have done that. And he was recognised as sports personality of the year after being world champ for 10years. Wayne Rooney got the award as soon as his career started. Saying that Joe wasn't promoting themselves the same way as Hamed and Hatton may be true but, if he is that good a promoter, isn't that his job?
You do realise he wasn't actually a champion for 10 years, right? I can't see the BBC giving the award to a WBO champion. He won the award as soon as he held the WBA and WBC titles, just as Lewis became sports personality when he became undisputed champion and not before.
