I just think, with the manner of victory and both fighters reputations going into the fight, that it is very, very impressive.

Hearns at his Welterweight best IMO. Utter decimation!

 

Probably beside the point but the manner of Hearns-Schuler is one that most people didn't see coming at the time.

 

I've not seen much of Cuevas, was he seen as some kind of beast that nobody wanted anything to do with?

Obviously his KO record was impressive.....

What were people expecting?

Being lazy and Boxrec'ing it just seemed like a bad piece of matchmaking from his management's point of view.....

Who would you reckon is Marquez's best win?

Mosley whacking Margarito was impressive but not on a part with UD12 over DLH....

Hopkins vs Pavlik isn't as impressive as TKO12 Trinidad.....

I'm just thinking of men that won big fights impressively whilst being (to all intents and purposes) past it.

 

Cueveas was a monster, probably underated by history due to getting banjoed by Hearns but looking back was probably made to measure from a styles point of view.

Schuler was an amatuer star, good all round boxing skills and highly rated as a pro. It was expected to be a real test for Hearns in only his second fight at 160.

 

I don't think Cuevas is all that tbh Gaz. A tremendous puncher of course, that is his trademark. Obviously a championship level fighter in any era but I don't think he's too underrated, unless people are claiming he's average of course. Live threat for anyone no doubt. He'd cause big problems for the likes of Cotto etc (Palomino would be worse though imo), but Cotto is good too so I don't write him off.

Anyway, not to go all historical but just thought I'd throw mine in as I saw the man being discussed.

 

Thats pretty much what I meant Teet, very good fighter but if you just saw the Hearns fight or Boxrec'd him you might think he was heavy handed but pretty average at that level. He was better than that IMHO....Hearns ruined him though!!

 

yeah I agree. It's very unfortunate for Cuevas that the thing he is remembered for first and foremost is getting raped to the point where his legs turned to jelly by Tommy Hearns! Annihilation.

 

Fighting Hearns at welter is a brutal proposition. For anybody. **** that, I'd dodge him like the plague if I was managing a welterweight. I wouldn't put my boy in with a 52 year old Hearns.

 

Me and my mate were talking today about the 168 division and about DeGale vs Ward down the line maybe. Obviously there is only one winner in my mind as it stands but if DeGale were to carry on going from strength to strength then I'd really be looking forward to that. (no jumping the gun)

 

Yeah, total nightmare. For me he was better at 154, primarily because he was more composed and more complete. For all his devastation at 147 he was more wild than his 154 self imo, which is why I would favour Robinson to send him to sleep, but at 154 he is probably the best there's been I reckon, probably challenged by McCallum who just maybe comes short, and Terry Norris (if it weren't for his chin he'd be the man I reckon)

 

Wouldn't favor him over Bodysnatcher. Then again I'm a bit of a Mike fanboy.

 

Who would you favour to beat Hearns H2H at 147? Leonard (obviously), Robinson, Gavilan after that its struggle Walcott, Griffith for styles maybe??
