Both Boza and Kelley were arguably the most exciting fighters of the 80s and 90s respectively. They were both talented southpaws who were capable of boxing at range but were so easily drawn into wars that they pretty much threw their boxing skills and defense out the door and were more than happy to get into exchanges. Most of their fights were grueling affairs that could be FOTY contenders. Who would you say was the more entertaining action fighter and who was involved in more memorable fights?
I really liked both. I met Kevin Kelley. Super nice guy. But, in my mind, Boza was a much better overall fighter and faced better opposition. As far as who was most exciting, I mean, it's hard to beat Kelley's exciting, closed eye, get-off-the-floor to win over Gainer. Really fun to watch. I don't know if Boza had a more exciting win. Then again, 'Smoke' Gainer wasn't anything special, when all was said and done.
Both were incredible exciting fighters. Kelley´s fights with Troy Dorsey, Gregorio Vargas, Alejandro Gonzalez, Ricardo Rivera (brilliant fight nobody seems to have seen), Gainer I and Naseem Hamed are all fantastic fights. Boza had crackers against Chacon (x2), Bazooka Limon, Roberto Elizondo, John Montes, Guy Villegas and Terrence Alli. Both were never say die southpaws with who gave their all in all their contests.
I would also add Kevin Kelley vs Harold Warren and Boza Edwards vs Blaine Dickson as well. Even in fights where they're clearly winning they still gets themselves in wild punch outs when they didn't need to. Honestly these two have probably been in more great fights than Arturo Gatti.
@Flo_Raiden, it’s my contention that Boza-Edwards was the most exciting fighter of the 1980s and Kelley was the most exciting fighter of the 1990s. Saad and Bobby Chacon usually get the most plaudits from the early 80s era but neither were in as many great fights as Boza in that decade at least - of course both Saad and Chacon crossed over from the 1970s so I’m not comparing their overall legacies here, just their fights in the 1980s. That’s why I rate Boza number 1 for excitement. Likewise, Gatti tends to get the credit as the most exciting fighter of his generation but that includes the fights with Ward which were in the early 2000s. For strictly the 1990s, Kelley had a higher quantity of exciting fights. Finally, just comparing the two fighters in question, it’s close but I’ve got to give the edge to Boza… just.
All great mentions. One more from me - Boza’s fight with Rocky Lockridge was also pretty damn good, even if it was a losing effort. He was just one of those can’t-afford-to-miss-him kind of fighters. That Rivera fight Kelley had was one I happened to stumble across not too long ago and my jaw hit the floor. More Kelley craziness - love him.
He took a couple of counts, and on the second one you could see him talking to himself and convincing himself he could continue as he rose. Pretty incredible stuff.
