Both men could bang with either hand, but both legends also had a legendary punch that they are associated with.

Which punch do you all think is more vital to the legend that is Rocky Marciano and Smokin' Joe Fazier??

The Rock's "suzie q" or Smokin' Joe's left hook.

Its tough for me because I can see it both ways. I've seen many of smokin' joe's fights with him bouncing and then leading with that viscious left which was made all the more famous since that punch preceded ali meeting the canvas. but the rock floored many a good fighter with that right hand of his. both punches in and of themselves are famous just as the fighters are legends.

    So what do ya'll think???

    :thumbsup

Rahman's right had more power but you are not allowed to compare modern fighters to fighters from the past.

you could say the same thing for shavers. i just meant that both of these fighters are legends and both are very well known for their signature shots.

so it wasnt who's was the more devastating punch but rather which one contributed more to the legend that was the fighter.

I think Frazier's knockdown of Ali in the 15th with a leaping left is more important and better known then Marciano's nuking of Walcott with his favored hand.

More mainstream fight, Ali is perhaps the most well known sports figure in history, etc.

Had Ali not been Ali, it might have been talk about as much as Fraizer's left hook on Foster or Ellis.

Because Ali IS Ali, it is the most rember punch.

Now the Rock landed a better/harder punch on Walcott, but media wise, Joe's left hook on Ali is of couse more well known.

Ali was the most famous man in the world. Joe's well photographed knockdown of him is the most frequently replayed punch in boxing history, and his hooks destroyed Ellis and Bob Foster.

To me, the second best knockout of Rocky's career was his double hook cold cocking of Matthews. Marciano's hook also dropped Louis, and was vastly superior to Joe's right, a good punch in itself, but not a shot he ever scored any spectacular knockdowns or knockouts with. (He did rip open Jerry Quarry's face with a long right in their rematch, ending that affair, but it was his earlier hook to the body which sagged Jerry to his knee.)

Just as devastating as the Walcott stoppage in my opinion.

If the ropes were there to hold Matthews up it probably would have looked like a carbon copy of the Walcott cold cocking. Matthews went down like a sack of ****.

I think that depends entirely on when you ask the question and to what generation. That is where you find the importance to anything in life.:blurp

Charley Goldman really did a tremendous job helping Marciano develop that hook, and we all know how surprised and impressed Louis was at how well Rocky mastered the use of it. The improvement of his hook from Layne to Louis and Matthews is truly remarkable to see on film. (Likewise, Angelo Dundee deserves credit for helping Ali shorten up and cultivate his own hook into a serviceable weapon. The left hook is one punch I was never comfortable executing, and it's my favorite punch to watch being delivered correctly.)

Same thing here, my left hook has always been.. Mediocre. Bah.

I had a dream about Marciano dogging Vitali around the ring for several rounds making his his look like a giant tampon, just to put it out there.

I never knew that fight would be so satisfying until I saw it play out like that.

Getting up as he did made Ali a legend. None of Marciano's fights enjoyed the international prominence as the FOTC. Keep in mind that this isn't about which was the better punch, but the more famous and legendary one. Joe produced a monster shot in the final round of a grueling fight, and Muhammad got up from it when most in that situation would have been too spent to even try.
