Lomachenko is 9 years older than Benitez was. He had way more time to learn the craft and practice it in the amateurs.

It strikes me that what should be most impressive are guys with no amateur record who rapidly work their way up through the pros and capture titles early in spite of their lack of experience. Didn't Duran and Pacquiao have almost no amateur experience and have to learn on the job? By contrast, guys like Lomachenko, Golovkin, or Rigondeaux who have already had 300 amateur matches and won Olympic gold, their early pro career is just a formality on their way to a title.

Good points. Billy Conn had no amateur experience, was matched tough from the start and went on to be an all time great. Can't begrudge a fighter for gaining as much am experience as he can, but I agree about what is more impressive.

Benitez beating Cervantes at 17 is one of the greatest wins in boxing history. It's got a good argument for being the best. A teenager shouldn't be beating a Hall of Famer who still had a few years of world class still left in him, period.

Lomachenko beating Salido would be an incredible feat, but one I'd have to rank below what Benitez did.

Now, if Loma beats Rigo before he's five fights into his career.....

This is just the first in a long line of "discredit Lomachenko" threads to come from JAB5239, Mr Pibb and the other usual suspects.

Exactly where have I discredited Lomachenko? I've been nothing but complimentary.

Oh, and I thought you had me on ignore and didn't read my posts unless they were in one of your threads? Seems someone (you) has a bad habit of lying. Tsk, tsk, tsk. :nono

in no way shape or form does this thread aim to discredit Lomachenko. Its just trying to put his possible acheivment into perspective and compare them to Benitez's amazing acheivment

Both would be amazing. You don't become the youngest world champion ever or get the record for fewest fights to a title without being special. For my money, as far as sheer impressiveness given the circumstances, there hasn't been a better win in boxing since Benitez-Cervantes.
