Should Calzaghe beat Kessler (and please don't post if you're going to say "Doesn't matter.. Kessler will win anyway" - this is in theory), he will have defended his WBO strap 21 times. This will equal Sven Ottke's divisional record with his IBF title. Both boxers are much maligned for the quality of their opposition so who would you say has the most impressive CV - even though both are ****? Opponents in

Forgetting that Ottke had one or two "favourable decisions", on paper, who's is better? Nardiello, Tate, Johnson, Mundine & Larsen are the standout names from Ottke's record casting aside the common opponents, while Calzaghe has Eubank, Woodhall, Lacy, Bika & Kessler.

On paper, it's close, but I reckon Calzaghe is ahead with Lacy & Kessler both being dangerous opponents pretty much in their prime.

Without fighting MK - JC would still have meet the best (my opinion naturally).

Sven Ottke's record was fraudulent, against lesser competition and even his legitimate wins were close. He had about 4 universally considered robbery/hometown wins, Calzaghe has never won by robbery and has dominated most.

Mikkel Kessler is of the A level class of fighter, Sven only fought B and B- guys.

Kessler, Lacy and Eubank are all a level up from anyone Ottke faced. Let's not leave out Byron Mitchell and Rob Reid, who Ottke got gift decisions over and who Joe smashed in 2 and won clear(aside from that Reid hometown judge) against.

Mundine only had 10 fights and had won every round up until that KO, not impressive.

    Mads Larsen was robbed blind.

Johnson, fair enough, but that was at a point where Johnson was losing a lot.

Even if Ottke had legitimately outclassed everyone he faced. Eubank, Lacy and Kessler are still a level up from anyone he fought, now take into fact that he most were competitive with him, for example, David Starie/Ottke could have been a draw, yet Calzaghe won 9 rounds to 3 over Starie.

Then where he should have a loss to Reid, Larsen, Brewer & Byron Mitchell.

    It's not comparable. Ottke was a euro-fraud, Calzaghe's a P4P elite.

Calzaghe is the better fighter (by a mile) however the resumes are very similar imo.

But if Joe beats Kess then beats another 2-3 great fighters like Hopkins, Pavlik or Tarver etc then he retires ahead.

Ottke has the most impressive names on his record if you don't take the dubious decisions into account, he also fought some of the shared names before Calzaghe, who was good at picking up the leftovers. This will however change if Calzaghe beats Kessler.

Calzaghe is the best boxer out of the two though.

woah why you ripping me up?

i said that ottke was a beatable champion and thus made fights easier to make...look at maskeav for example last year there was talk of
briggs,ruiz,hopkins,wlad,williams,harrison,toney....actully every heavywiehgt hopeful was wanting a shot against maskaev.

this is why i said fights are easy to make when you can be beaten. calzaghe has never looked easy to beat and the closest fight i can think of was against reid and that i felt calzaghe won

I agree, until Calzaghe beat Lacy he was just another title holder to most people.
