GGG-Lemieux reportedly did 97k ppv buys for a total Box-Office Bust.. i expect the Floyd-berto option to increase on the poll immensly..
You have the gift Rumsfeld. They all relatively tanked like a sinking ocean liner. Ross Greenburg, then president of HBO Sports, called the expansion of pay-per-view "the biggest economic issue in boxing", stating "I can't tell you that pay-per-view helps the sport because it doesn't. It hurts the sport because it narrows our audience, but it's a fact of life. Every time we try to make an HBO World Championship Boxing fight, we're up against mythical pay-per-view numbers. HBO doesn't make a lot of money from pay-per-view. There's usually a cap on what we can make. But the promoters and fighters insist on pay-per-view because that's where their greatest profits lie. PPVs are going the way of the Dodo.
For those that care... Rounding out the lowest/highest reported numbers for the PPVs; 475k for Mayweather-Berto's 400k-550k range and 123.5k for Golovkin-Lemieux's 97k-150k. The GGG-Lem fight was 2/3's the cost, sold 1/4 the Floyd fight (buys), at only 1/10 the cost. Based on PPV buys vs purses alone... May-Ber cost $36m, and almost broke even at $35.6m. Gol-Lem cost $3.5m, and made $6.1m. Again, based on PPV cost and buys alone, Mayweather's fight lost half a million. Golovkin's fight brought in almost $3 million dollars profit.
Nice breakdown. That's all I wanted was facts. Now let's not forget the gate money in which Mayweather made $25 million. Now how much did GGG vs Lemieux make at the gate and the issue will be settled?
That, I do not know. Only conclusion I drew from those numbers I posted is that Mayweather is a bigger draw, by far, but over paid.
