I read comments about a possible robbery. This "robbery" was a close fight against a pressure figher who is too undersized to be efficient at HW and an inactive taller guy. Mormeck tried to turn the fight into a war after a 1st round with no action, he was the agressor and tried his best to fight inside. He threw many punches, most were blocked even if he landed some good hooks. Mormeck had a tight guard and Oquendo's jab was not good enough to keep such a small opponent at bay. Not very impressive : instead he controled with clinches and he landed a few good uppercuts. Mormeck tried everything but maybe Oquendo could have done more. Hence I understand he can feel frustrated. He was not in danger, not very active, waiting for his opponent to be exhausted. Problem : is never really happened since it was a 10 rounder + Mormeck's stamina looked a bit better than it was in his last fights. Being too inactive Oquendo helped Mormeck who was able to recover between the action sessions he had initiated. If the fight had been in the USA I am not so sure Oquendo would have obtained the decision. I notice the US judges often prefer the agressor in the close rounds. In Germany I feel it's the opposite and Oquendo would have obtained the decision (of course not against a german boxer). It's difficult to judge such a fight and many fans and commentators don't know much about the 4 criteria system anyway.
No one cares. Mormeck was a good cruiserweight whose status has been elevated by Haye fans who want people to believe his resume is much more impressive than it actually is. Fact is, Mormeck was on the slide even when Haye beat him, now he can even get past a washed up Oquendo.
From the posters who saw the fight, it seems fres clearly landed more effective punches in a not too entertaining fight. Your point that Fres often doesn't do enough when he should realize that the judges are biased against him is valid. Fres should step it up and go for broke in such fights. That said, IMO a boxing match should be scored based upon effective punching and not "aggressiveness" (how does aggressiveness hurt the other guy?) and it sounds like fres should have got the "W" in this boxing match.
It's not surprising. With Oquendo's inability to finish a fight, this is the result I expected. Even if he finished Mormeck, the referee would probably have disqualified him for something.
Fitir - other than you, I haven't seen a single person who said that Mormeck even COULD have gotten the win. Pretty much every reputable boxing website is saying it was a robbery. Fres does have an ugly style though, and he's always had problems with getting judges to give him credit for it. He was also clearly robbed against Toney and Byrd, he very easily could have been awarded the decision against Holyfield, and the Ruiz fight was prematurely stopped.
Did they give their scorecards or did they give their general impression ? It's not as if Oquendo had fought with heart ! Robbed ? He robbed the guy who paid to see the fight that's for sure. WHO is responsible for the not too entertaining fight ? Mormeck clearly came for the war and initiated the action. Fres clearly tried nothing in the majority of the rounds...and he also landed nothing in those rounds, losing them. Not to say he occasionally ate a few good hooks when he didn't clinch early enough ! A few uppercuts and elbow shots in the other rounds he "won" but it's not very impressive. Is clinching and hitting with the elbows "effective punching" ? Ruiz also won decisions with that strategy but I don't think it's good for boxing. I have nothing against guys who control the action with the jab even if it is boring but controlling the action with clinches...no.
I dont know why Oquendo doesnt just quit. I cant believe this was a guy that was once ranked among the top 10 at heavy in the world. He's a pile of dog****. And Mormeck retire already.
Mormeck should fight small HW who really want to fight, not inactive wrestlers. Holyfield would have given a better show ! It seems Mormeck has improved his stamina and he can give at least 8 good rounds of war. The fights against Bell and Haye were fun to watch. Problem is that he still thinks HW boxing = USA and he only wants to fight US boxers... Oquendo was a poor choice.
:good Every time I see him fight, I wonder: -How is this guy struggling so much with you? -How did you ever get this far?
Yea, a pile of dog **** that clearly beat accomplished former world champions Toney, Byrd, Holy and now Mormeck. I guess.....Toney, Byrd, Holy and Mormeck are dog**** too right?
Clearly beat ? He has not the style to "clearly" beat someone. Oquendo should fight some inactive bear to end his career. He had promised a war at the press conference and now he feels robbed after a fight he clinched to death. I would pay to see Mormeck vs Adamek. It's too late in Mormeck's career but at least it would give a couple of rounds with some REAL action.
Well I donno if he clearly beat Mormeck cause I didnt see that fight but he DEFINATLY clearly beat Toney, Byrd and Holy. Like the other poster said in the posts before..... Byrd was looking for a late round KO cause he thought he was losing... Toney after round 12 was in his corner with his head down praying to god he wins..... Yes, clearly. Byrd, Toney, and Holy all knew they got their asses kicked and it showed.
Promising a war at a press conference and doing what Oquendo did...who is robbed ? Did you watch Mormeck fights against Braithwaite, Bell, Haye in fact any fight with Mormeck ? Action fights ! It was the 1st time I saw Mormeck in a boring fight and he tried everything to initiate the action. I hate Oquendo clinch and hit style (especially when many shots are elbow shots)
I have nothing against JMM, hes a warrior and fought some great battles that I have seen with Haye, Bell and Hill.
