Sporting Life: MORRISON HANDED TITLE SHOT Former British light-welterweight champion Barry Morrison has been given the chance to reclaim the belt from David Barnes. Morrison will fight Mancunian Barnes, who won the vacant title with victory over Ted Bami last month, in Liverpool on May 9. The fight at Everton Park Sports Centre will come less than a year after the 27-year-old lost his first defence against Colin Lynes in his home town of Motherwell. Come on Barry, good to see your getting your shot Another belt coming to the north
I'm still disappointed Lynes was forced to vacate the British Title. Great opportunity for Morrison to recapture the belt so good luck to him. :good
yee ha............liverpool look out the bizness crew are coming for a party :good good luck to the bizness has anyone been to the everton park sports centre for a show? apparently derry mathews on show the last time in 2005, unless they havnt updated ther site recently.
This is a cracking fight! Its one thats sure to split brit ESB right down the middle closer to fight time, & three guesses who my moneys on:smoke
Seen an amateur show there not seen a pro show yet. Jackson Asiku beat McKeever there though In 2006.
Good luck to Barry. A real shame that Lynes was forced to give it up but hopefully he will be trying to get on the next step of the ladder and closer to a title shot. The Morrison fight should be good. I am guessing Sky will be televising?
According to the Sky boxing schedule both of these fights will be aired on Sky Sports 1 9th May @ 10.00pm - David Barnes v Barry Morrison British Light Welterweight Title Also Colin Lynes v Gianluca Branco European Light Welterweight Title
I think this will be a good scrap. In terms of ability, I would say that Barnes has the edge, but if he doesn't turn up, Morrison could have him here. Lynes vs Branco is an interesting fight, Lynes seems to be at the peak of his powers, whilst Branco has only lost to Gatti and an emerging Cotto, but hasn't had a 12 rounder since then. I'm not sure what Lynes can do to climb the ladder after this though - not exactly a name is he? With a defeat to Witter on his resume he will hardly be a big proposition Stateside, whilst Hatton wouldn't be interested in the slightest.
It was hoped that by Lynes fighting Branco he would not only fulfil his mandatory but would achieve a WBO rating - but I think since Branco withdrew against Lynes last time he has fallen out of the top 15. Never going to be easy for Lynes operating in the same division as Hatton and Witter but hopefully he can keep racking up the wins and keep his career momentum going.
I would rank Lynes in the top 15 140lb'ers, comfortably in fact. The way the WBO works, I'm surprised he ain't the mandatory challenger. Or are those spots reserved for Sports Network fighters, or guys coming out of retirement after three years out? I'm a cynic!
