I'd say cautiously, yes. Mercer was never a particularly good boxer, but he was a great slugger and Morrison had an inflated sense of his ability to blow Mercer away which led to his downfall. Tommy would have been much better advised to box and not slug. Tommy could box pretty well when he wanted to. Of course Mercer always has his ruggedness and his big punch. Damiani was another big dude who could box, and he was pretty much whitewashing Mercer before Ray switched him off with a single punch. Certainly he might do that to any version of Morrison.
I think Morrison has a better chance than Damiani because he had quicker hands and a much bigger punch. Sure, Morrison overestimated his ability to stop Mercer. But Morrison had more than enough power to make it difficult for Mercer to break through his defense like he did vs Damiani. Morrison was really hurting Mercer early, even Mercer admitted that. So if Morrison boxes, his quicker hands will beat Mercer to the punch, and if Mercer tries to break through that, Morrison could throw some power shots and Mercer would have to reset instead of marching forwards.
Good point. I'd say Damiani was a solid puncher but Morrison was one of the upper tier of power punchers, not so easy to take chances with.
No. Mercer at his best will always get to Morrison . Tommy was a great on top fighter .Ray will not allow him that position. Mercer will not be stopped and will grind Tommy to paste. Ray was very dangerous bloke and too much for Tommy.
