Morrison vs. Foreman, an underrated war.

Morrison of Foreman can see it through with Lewis without problems imo. As to all his other versions youre right: Lewis too strong for him as well as Holyfield and Mercer.

 

How good was Foreman at this point? He tends to get overrated in his comeback. He was the product of careful matchmaking. Yes he put on an absolutely inspired performance against Holyfield. However up to that point he had fought mostly stiffs, Cooney was coming off a loss and fought once in 4 years. George scraped by Alex Stewart and his face looked like a gum ball machine. He then lost to Morrison, was getting beaten like a drum by Moorer who wasn’t great and showed poor ring IQ in their bout. Then he got totally gifted a win against Schulz, avoided the rematch and closed out with a string of close wins over Savarese and I felt George won against Briggs.
The fact he was even competitive is an amazing testament to his ability and courage. But at no point during Foreman’s comeback do I rate him as a top 3 heavyweight and outside of a last minute comeback against Moorer I probably wouldn’t rate him higher than a 7 in the division.
really is a bad loss on Moorer’s career.

I think that a few years younger George would stop Morrison, but at this point he was too slow and too slugish.

 

I do think the fight was underrated, and a very hard fought scrap, but it was no war, it was a bit too tactical and repetitive to be a war.

If Morrison did want to go the distance with Lewis, he'd have to do a hell off a lot of running and keep his punches low volume

Sheer lunacy. Morrison could never reproduce this strategy against another elite heavy because no heavy of his day had as slow feet as Foreman. Tommy was literally running away with his back turned from George, who had cement boots on his tootsies.

Lewis and Holyfield destroy... I mean humiliate... I mean make Tommy's mama sorry she bore him... ANY version of Morrison.

 

Bowe and McCall sure weren't very mobile.

 

I cringe when i relive this fight. Figured it would be similar to Foreman/ Frazier........Had a 1000 dollars in the bank for rent---roommates money included, and spent all afternoon calling my bookie to bet on Foreman. Never reached him so went to the bar -watched the fight and got sicker as it went on. A lucky day for me

 

They were a magnitude more mobile than Foreman in his 40's.

If the key to Morrison's success was the strategy he used against Foreman, why didn't he use it against Mercer, Bentt and Lewis... or even Joe Hipp?

In the end, Morrison was a marginal heavyweight, a guy who cracked the annual top 10 twice, both times at number 8. If he weren't portrayed as white (which he wasn't exactly) he would be called Lionel Butler.
