Moruti Mthalane Appreciation Born in South Africa, October 6th, 1982. 30-2, KO 20 Notable fights: 2008- USA- L TKO6 Nonito Donaire (19-1) challenging for Donaire's IBF/IBO flyweight titles Seemed to win two rounds from a prime Donaire before a small cut forced a seemingly quick stoppage. 2009- South Africa- W UD12 Julio Cesar Miranda (30-4-1) for vacant IBF flyweight title Top notch victory over future titlist as Miranda won the WBO title 6 months later with multiple defenses. 2010- South Africa- W TKO5 Zolani Tete (13-0) Mthalane's first IBF title defense Great stoppage round. This win aged well with Tete's recent 115 pound wins over Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. and Teiru Kinoshita to claim a vacant title. 2011- South Africa- W TKO5 John Riel Casimero (14-1) Mthalane's second IBF title defense Win aged well immediately after as Casimero has gone on to win the 108 pound IBF title and defend it. 2011- Italy- W TKO7 Andrea Sarritzu (32-4-4) Mthalane's third IBF title defense Typical tough customer, low KO%, but highly experienced opponent road defense. 2012- Panama- W TKO8 Ricardo Nunez (24-2) Mthalane's fourth IBF title defense Typical tough customer, high KO%, but relatively inexperienced opponent road defense. 2014- South Africa- W SD12 Jether Oliva (20-1-2) for vacant IBO flyweight title ---------------
This guy is relatively unknown but highly underrated imo. He should start fighting more often against better named fighters to get more exposure and prove his worth.
Who knows if I'm looking at the right ratings, but interesting guys on the IBF list he could fight would be: #4- Luis Concepcion #7- Wilbert Uicab #8- Rocky Fuentes (#1 and #2 are vacant, just a random fyi) Nice observation. I think he fights effectively out of his slight crouch. His jab doesn't lack because of it.
Not good enough names to build up a better career for him He'd still remain relatively unpopular even if he'd beat all those 3. Why give Concepcion a chance to come back through him btw? He needs to fight better names like Viloria, for instance. A move up in weight to fight Narvaez would also be good. Unifying with Igarashi could also be good for him too. Or Wonjongkam
Another good SA fighter a bit held back by hardly fighting outside their comfort zones. He's shown he's championship caliber but not elite. But yeah, Casimero is a nice addition to his resume.
He did fight Nunez in the latter's backyard, so he's not averse to fighting away from home. He's a good well-schooled boxer puncher and he isn't an easy out for anyone at or near the weight.
Here is a video of Donaire vs. Mthalane if anyone is interested. I thought rounds 1-3 were Donaire's, and Mthalane took 4-5 clearly before the round 6 beating and inner eyelid cut caused a stoppage. Compubox numbers through the first 5 rounds... Donaire: 57/273, 21% Mthalane: 61/261, 23% I would at least recommend viewing round 4 and 6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hfp4RraJdhA Here is in one of his less heralded (rightfully so) fights against Zolani Tete. Watch round 5! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZfPp96AWc4 edit: sorry, don't know how to embed...
I just scene that the IBF has ordered Mthalane to make a mandatory defense of his belt on or before June 1st. He must face 24 year old Filipino Froilan Saludar. Saludar is 16-0-1, 11 KO's. Apparently the fight is being discussed to take place in the Philippines along with a Casimero IBF title defense.
OW ****!!! That would be awesome. I tell you guys, think of Saludar as a hair slower, but with better right hand version of Donaire (In fact his right is his money punch). And he is a well-schooled fighter too who can be in search and destroy mode or box from the outside hence his "Sniper" moniker. The kid has all the tools and potential to be a champion. Time to find out how far he will go, I would say this is an acid test if there ever was one.
I gave Mthalane rounds 3 rounds against Donaire, but he was getting a pretty bad beating in the 6th. It was a crappy cut stoppage though.
Mthalane will travel to Germany to defend his title for the fifth time. It will be his fourth time traveling overseas to do so. He will fight Silvio Olteanu. The purse bid was won by a German promoter for... $11,215. Yes. Eleven thousand.
That is nice. The first time since a lot of years, that we will see a world class boxer in germany. :happy
He's top notch no doubt that. His win over a young Casimero is good. Beating Miranda is very impressive as well.
