Watching Mosley vs Cotto the other day, just wondered what this fight might tell us about the blockbuster in november, for me this was Cotto's coming out party, this was where he showed different dimensions to his game, not just the methodical bodypuncher, but that he could box on the backfoot, he showed guile and precision, long, middle and short range. he looked more of a well rounded fighter against someone of the calibre of sugar Shane. Here's the biggest aspect I noticed in this fight in relation to pacquiao, he nullified Mosley's speed. Pacquiao has similar speed to shane (Mosley might even be faster) and pacquiao is even easier to find. Also not that long ago they both displayed similar deficiencies and slight fundamental mistakes, they were both what i like to call fast brawlers, now granted pacquiao has improved immeasurably to the point where he's now almost a complete fighter and not the one handed guy who squared up, but he still ain't the hardest to find. I know styles make fights and not resumes and past/common opponents, I know that was a pre plaster of paris and scar tissue Cotto, I know that was a pre nazim Shane (papa Mosley is whack) but i was just impressed with the way he nullified that speed....Pacquiao/Cotto is by no means an easy win for Manny, lots of intangibles in this fight. This is not a prediction nor a breakdown rather just an observation.
at this stage of their careers pacs speed is way ahead of mosley. pac is constantly moving shane tends to trade. they are two different styles and pac is faster.
I've been thinking the same thing, all these Pac fans keep talking about how Pac is just too fast for Cotto, they seem to forget about the Mosley fight. Cotto is capable of dealing with fast fighters, he dealt with Mosley, Judah, and Malinaggi (although clearly Mallinaggi and Judah are not on Pac or Mosley's level as fighters but they are on their level in terms of speed).
Those are great points. Cotto was able to time his shots well, especially his jab. I definitely think that he has a good chance against Pac. But Pac fights by going in and out of range these days. Mosley has a tendency to trade more.
i agree. noone thought he could outbox mosley and thats exactly wht he did. he was often first on every exchange and handled mosleys speed. i think he would be able to handle pacs speed and be able to also deliver the crushing body blows that will help him gain a victory
As far as handspeed you are correct that they are close in speed. But I think whats really setting Pac apart at this time is his foot speed. I can't think of anyone who can match it. Also Pac has superior head movement at this point also. But he is smaller and not as physically strong as Shane who also probably throws better combos.
I've been wanting to re-watch that Cotto/Mosley fight, but haven't gotten the chance to. Do you have a link for that fight?
lets not forget Pacs last three opponents always had problems with fighters with speed. I dont think its a case of Pac being that much better than when he fought JMM. Roach picked the right fighters at the right time. I dont think this fight will be nearly as competitive as people think. Pac is being seriously hyped up here. I will be shocked if Pac actually signs the contract.
this is a shocking revelation, of course pac will sign the contract. this is a megafight too hard to pass up because of money involved. pac advantage will be the angles and his excellent footsteps. i agree cotto will land somewhere along the fight and im excited to see how pac will react to cotto's power. one serious right hook from pac and his combinations follow. watch morales3 and delahoya fights, his combinations were set up by a big right hook.
One thing Mosley and Pac DONT have in common is stance(Manny is Southpaw)....Go watch Cotto/Judah and see how easy and often Zab hit Cotto with the Sraight Left and the uppercut....Manny has alot of power in that left hand and if he uses it right it will set up his right hand that will open up that cut
I see your point but Morales legs were shot by the time the third fight came around and Delahoya was pretty much done at this point in his career. Cotto is the type of fighter that gives Pac problems. The flipside is Cotto has always made the adjustments against quick fighters like Pac. Judah gave angles and has a better offensive arsenal than Pac. I personaly think Pac is overated. But if he does beat Cotto he would have beaten a better boxer and a true ww in his prime and that would certainly make him an ATG.
1. We are not arguing for excuses, but styles. 2. Pac overated? If you mean against Cotto, we will see. 3. 6 division champ, 4 lineals. with or without cotto, Pac is an atg.
To give Pac problems, Cotto would have to be as sharp with counter like Marquez, pump the jab and defend himself from Pac's left straight. If Pac can withstand Cotto's power, Cotto will be in for a long night. I don't expect for Pac to starch Cotto like he did with Hatton, but I still think he would win. I wouldn't say Pac is overrated though. He deserves credit for his wins. The dela Hoya he beat up may not have been 100%, but I can't think of any fighter coming up from 135 at that time that could give OScar that kind of beating.
