It is probably a little unfair, not giving enough emphasis to the severity of the cut, but i don't think he was boxing particularly effectively off the back foot. He slipped into bouts of running instead of trusting in his offensive arsenal. Only he knows just how big of an effect that cut had on him that night though, so its only speculation on my part.
I think we're getting into funny territory here. Was it really that Shane showed up with his B game? Or that Cotto did so well at keeping him a little off form. I mean, this is what the Klitschko brothers have to deal with. It's hard to tell if their opponents show up ready or if they're just so good they don't give them the chance to do anything. I think Arreola would've beaten the majority of the HW division in the same shape he got hammered by Vitali in. I wonder how good Marquez was when he showed up against Mayweather. Was it more that Marquez is coming to the end of his career and slowing way down with the extra weight and the hard fights or was it more that Mayweather was fighting at as close to perfect as you can ask a fighter to fight? With Cotto/Mosley, you never know. But it was so competitive for the top welterweight in the world at the time with an older former light middleweight coming back down to welterweight, I think Shane did damned well considering. I scored it for Cotto comfortably but that's because I thought he slightly edged Shane on several very close rounds not because I thought Cotto was that much better. It was a very, very good fight.
Cotto baffled Mosley and Mosley came in thinking Cotto was chinny and he only needed one, clean flush shot.
i'll watch this over the next few days. i wanna watch williams-margo as well. from what i remember cotto was a deserving winner. i scored it 7-5 cotto. cotto gave shane problems with his quick, crisp punches. :bbb
I was disappointed with how Mosley finished off the fight. Shane would have known he would have needed either a knockout or a huge round 12 in order to win the fight, and he just came out in the twelveth round doing absolutely **** all. Fought way to passive towards the end. Cotto deserved the win, but Mosley also has himself to blame.
Punch stat comparisons of the Margarito - Mosley matchup are interesting. Mosley threw just as many punches against Cotto as he did against Margarito (500 odd over 9 rounds). All the while landing a higher % of power punches against Cotto (49% versus 53%). Punch stats aren't everything but its hard to fault Mosley's physical conditioning when he threw just as many punches, landing more power punches, whilst being hit more often and more cleanly by a more accurate puncher (particularly to the body frequently). Cotto landed his biggest shots of the fight in the 11th, so Mosley might have been somewhat hesitant/demoralised.
the same thing happened in the clottey fight, cotto has something in his plan that neutralizes his opponents.
While I have to go back and look at the punch stats those numbers can be misleading. Lets just say for numbers sake he landed 201/400 punches on Cotto. But on Marg he landed 300/650. The % is better with the Cotto fight but he clearly landed more hard shots on Marg.
I have to disagree here. Mosley ran out of gas after about round 3, and had to start bouncing up on his toes and boxing and moving to stay in the fight. I think he must have seen Cotto get rocked and thought that he could just take him out early, not expecting a tough, long fight. When he hit Cotto with everything he had and Cotto was still standing there, I don't think he was prepared to last the stretch. His defence was poor, his arms were hanging down and he was just looking to land the KO shot again and again. I think the rejuvinated Mosley is a lot better conditioned and much more patient as well as strategically aware - and that Mosley would give any of the top fighters at 147 a hard time (if not a whooping).
This is an astute observation. Mosley was loading up with everything, and when Cotto didn't buckle he looked totally clueless and lethargic.
I had it even; I think Mosley changed tack enough to steal the odd round here and there and keep himself in the running.
