Cotto could have clinched and done well. he just didnt and he BANGED with MARG too much. Mosley set the distance, pace and game plan that was terrific. The speed which was in favor of Shane was what helped make this preformance a terrific one. Cotto doesn't have the speed of Shane but he has the skill necessary to beat Marg....he just doesn't have the mind set to NOT got toe to toe and he doesn't hold. PRIDE is Cotto's big problem with Marg.

NOTHING LIKE RUIZ or Wald! The way Shane clinched was through a certain method. he'd keep range, pop the jab, come with the overhand right and follow up Hook. Marg would eat all of that and then start to try and throw offence which is when Shane would tie him up on the inside. But he'd let got and get back to a distance where he could be effective. Ruiz would Jab and grab...Wald would just tie you up if you were close enough...at least for hte first peter fight he did. Shane's game plan was beautiful...thanks to Nazim.

Tony was looking to get out of the cliniches b/c he knew that would be his best chance at catch Shane...on the inside. Which would also make it hard for Shane NOT to go toe to toe! Which is what Marg wanted.

Another thing Mosley actually tried to hurt Margo, Cotto NEVER committed to his shots, none of them were anywhere near as hard or as thudding as what SSM was landing. Cotto was always on his backfoot trying to get away, even while he was punching, his was trying to score pts not hurt Margo. Hell Margo got hit harder by Paul Williams then he did by Cotto.

Anther good point! Actually Cotto did early on but he got discouraged b/c the effects where not showing and Marg just kept smiling. That made Cotto change his speed about regarding throwing haymakers. Shane....he saw that his punches didn't really affect Marg early on but believed enough in his power to stay consistant and keep teeing off and eventually every man has their breaking point. Credited to the EXPERIENCE and GREATNESS of Shane Mosely!

Zab Judah rocked him, but never looked nearly as stunned or phased as he did in Marg fight. He was weight-drained when he fought Paulie. Nothing in his 147 reign shows he had a shaky chin. Everyone wants to talk about a suspect chin, but cmon now...those were in his 140 days when he was weight-drained.

He took the same shots from Mosley that Margarito took...not as many. But the same and he didn't look ready for canvas. He looked stunned yes...but Mosley is a monster hitter...he never looked dazed though as in ready for a canvas nap. He was stunned and realized he better not eat anymore of those shots and boxed himself to a UD.

Lujan's ear thing is evidence enough...how many times do you think a ****ING EAR! comes off a fighter's head from fighting...wtf?!:-:)scaredas:

I'm sorry, but as the interviews and excuses that come out about this...the more suspect it is...

Shane has always been respectful to fighter...However I think that the thread starter is over stating what was said...I dont recall all that, I heard him say that Margo caught him with a couple of good body shots...How one could get from that to Margo would have stopped him is unreal..Well maybe not coming from Margo fans...They seem to think that none of his loses count....By the way I dont ever remember anyone saying that Larry Dixon was a special fighter:huh

not really boxing's a contact sport, part of the game is getting hit, even the best defensive fighters in the world get hit

and Mosley saying Margarito hit him, and stunned him is no real shocker here, again hitting your opponent is part of boxing.

yeah Shane's saying individual punches stunned him .... well isn't that boxing for you? I don't see why your so surprised by this.

and take into consideration that Marg isn't exactly throwing out love taps

and don't you think the "durability issues" of Cotto are over blown to an extend? yeah Miguel's been badly rocked at 140 by Torres and Corley to name 2 fighters, however going into the Margarito fight Cotto had been only dropped once. and for all the damage Judah did vs Cotto, even he couldn't get drop Cotto.

Cotto doesn't have the strongest chin in the world, but through 33 pro fights IMO I think it's held up reasonably well

(from hearing about Cotto's chin + durability you'd think Cotto had been down 5 or 6 times in his career, and that's clearly not the case)

well at 147 Judah is still a very hard puncher, and quick to boot .. speed and power are a deadly combo, and Judah being able to stun someone off 1 shot shows that.

and what about Malignaggi stunning Cotto? I saw Paulie vs Hatton and it looked at one point during the Hatton/Malignaggi fight where Paulie hit Ricky and had him off balance

SO WHAT. it's boxing, you hit a guy in the right spot and they'll react. Isn't part of the object to hit your opponent? it doesn't really surprise me because just about anyone when hit in the right spot can go down, or get rocked .. **** happens

hell Paulie might be a light hitter, but go up 60 plus pounds to Heavyweight and Zuri Lawrence doesn't have any wins by knockout.

but yeah going back to the original point about the Dempsey/Willard situation .. didn't the fighter on the receiving end of the plaster wind up getting knocked out cold? (which relates to your ****ed up beyond relief)

so taking everything into consideration, maybe this was a one time isolated incident with the loaded gloves

because I'll answer my own ?ion as to why Margarito would do it now in his career and not earlier

relating it to a diff sport, but same idea. Pitchers in there older age need to maintain shape so they can keep playing and not fall off

Margarito at 30 years old is already as good as he's going to get, and maybe coming off the Cotto win he felt the pressures of trying to stay at the top ... thus the attempted Glove loading.

because not just taking Margarito's power into consideration (be it powerful great, hard, etc) but the sheer volume of it (be it body shots or upper cuts on the inside)

then maybe his opponents should have gotten more wrecked.

    The End

I wouldn't say a change in refs would have drastically altered the outcome, but Caiz did let Shane get away with a lot of clinching and grabbing. There was one point (maybe round three or four) where he got hit with a straight right going backward, and literally jumped forward and hugged like he was hanging on for dear life, although all he was really doing was breaking Tony's momentum.

At that point, I'd have given Shane a very strong warning. Caiz acted like nothing happened.

I couldn't disagree more. There is just absolutely no basis for what you're saying here. It's just the opposite in fact - the collective punishment Margarito laid on Cotto took a cumulative toll, the power shots that Judah landed (that had Cotto almost out on his feet several times) were BLATANTLY more damaging. One of us is living in bizarro world for sure..

There is absolutely no way you're going to con me with this nonsense about Cotto having no chin issues at 147. He may have shown some measure of improvement, but to say he's had none is a complete and utter fabrication. I watch fights very ****ing closely, and there hasn't been ONE, not a single one, where Cotto DIDN'T show some subtle indication of punch resistance issues somewhere at that weight. The only guy who didn't catch his attention at any point at all whatsoever was probably Oktay Urkal. Besides him almost everybody has landed something of note, including Alfonso Gomez and Carlos Quintana. Cotto is one of my preferred fighters to watch. I'm not buying that for one single second.

You've lost me on some of this. Getting hurt in a fight is not at all a dime a dozen type thing. You're competely missing the point. If Mosley is going to characterize someone's power as "great," that's not something to pass over.

As far as Dempsey and Willard, no, it was a helluva lot more than somebody just getting knocked cold. Willard recieved severe blunt force trauma injuries. You should look into it.
