I've watched the Mosley vs Cotto fight several times and tried to be extremely objective. Let me say this, " I feel Shane Mosley is a phenominal talent as well as a true gentleman, and everything that is good for the sport of boxing. My opinion is such that although there are many who think Shane may have pulled that particular fight out, " there's just no way. Unbelievably, Mosley was outboxed by Cotto. If you go to youtube, there are many replays of this fight. You'll see Cotto doing things Margarito never even thought of while fighting Mosley. Cottos footwork is nothing short of excellent. Cottos jab kept Mosley honest throughout the entire fight ( my opinion ). Cotto slipping in and out and countering beautifully. Perhaps most importantly in his win against Shane.......Cottos lateral movement. Seemingly it disrupted Shanes timing in a big way. Just as it seemed Shane was about to unleash, Cotto slips to one side or the other, then bangs with big shots. These are all things that Margarito has no idea how to incorporate in his game. Based on the above,,,,should there be a rematch, I have to go with Cotto. Mosley vs Cotto was an absolute boxing clinic performed by two outstanding athletes and TRUE boxers. It was a beautiful fight. Though Mosley came up a bit short, his efforts were nothing short of gallant. For the life of me I cannot understand how Cotto lost to Margarito. Margarito seemed super human in that fight but even so, he posesses NONE of the skills that Cotto demonstrates. And lets leave loaded gloves out of this please. Nothing has ever been mentioned again by the commission on this subject, that I'm aware of.
If Cotto is still the same fighter after that Margo fight, I would also pick Cotto by UD again. People forget that styles makes fights and Margo made Mosley look like an unstoppable force.
I agree........... I don't feel Mosley will be able to get away with many of the tactics he used on Margarito, without taking big shots from Cotto. Margarito could not land punches on Shane. I doubt Margarito landed more than 5 effective punches the entire fight. Cotto will land punches. When he does it will be like throwing a wrench in a fan and have a dramatic effect on any game plan. In short, Cotto will do something that Margarito didn't. He will land punches.
I think Mosley takes a rematch if he doesn't age any since the Margo fight. He's done better in his rematches against Winky and Forrest, and he only lost the first one by a point or (at most) two. I don't think he was quite ready for what Cotto brought to the table in their first fight, I honestly think he underestimated Cotto. I think he'll be able to learn a lot from watching their first fight. Also, Cotto is coming off of a devastating loss, and Mosley is coming off of a career defining win. Not to mention Mosley now has Nazim Richardson in his corner now, who could probably help greatly in coming up with a fight strategy.
Yup styles makes fights . . . Margo has shown the blue print on how to beat Cotto and Mosley being an agile fighter will surely study that fight and put it to his advantage. I picked Cotto UD in the first fight. (correct pick) I picked Margo UD against Mosley. (wrong pick) It's still a 50/50fight for me . . . but I'll pick Mosley this time.
To me, this is one of the most over-hyped aspects of boxing. Floyd Mayweather Sr. Nazim Richardson Jack Lowe ETC ETC Thay all like to take credit for something someone else does. These are overpaid people. Ultimately , when a fighter steps into the ring, the fighter himself is the one who has to make it happen. There are times when the plan someone else came up with does not work at all. Often. Now everyones praising Nazim Richardson who came up with this silly term " swim without getting wet" Obviously, fighters need trainers and cornermen but praising them as Gods, and crediting them for a top p4p boxers win, is somewhat ridiculous. No flame intended
If you think a great trainer can't make a big difference in the out come of a fight, you're mistaken.
Mosley lost to Cotto because he came in with an unfocused strategy, and maybe because he was influenced in some way by the Cotto hype and tried to play 'tough guy'. Mosley would win a rematch. Unless Margarito's gloves were loaded against Cotto, Margarito will beat Cotto every time. I picked Margarito the first time and I'd pick him again to beat Cotto.
I would say 50 - 50 I too have watched the fight many times, I always score it a close win for Shane (however I first scored it as a Draw - With no 10-10 rounds btw) But either way the later rounds were hard to score....Mosley pressing the action & Cotto on his bike, but landing effective counters! Its a toss up in the next one! It will be interesting to see if Margo has in anyway 'dented' cotto..... Either way the first fight was great and I cannot wait to see what happens!
Anyone who thinks Cotto will be the same fighter after the ass beating he took from Margarito isn't thinking clearly
IMO he will be alright. He's training hard and doing his work. I went to the gym the other day to workout with some buddies of Miguel and saw him there. He looked pretty sharp. But then again, we have to wait and see how he does in an actual fight. Lets hope he comes back alright!
