I guess so, but I don't know many casual fans who give a **** about mayweather other than hoping the guy he is fighting beats his ass.

 

True. Maybe biggest star is the wrong term to describe him because to be a star is to be popular which he isnt. Biggest attraction is better since he talks alot of **** which attracts ppl to watch him, whether they like him or want to see him get his ass beat.

You are talking of course on PPV buys.

Obviously, you have to consider the viewing popluation's demographics. The US (where PPV numbers are based) is 300 million plus of differnt racial origin.

As much as you would deny it, a non-american fighter will never get the same amount of PPV rergardless how exciting that non-american is. Boxing afterall is not a mainstrean sports where people just watch it for the sake of watching - it is a niche event. Many people find it too violent (?), while probably 90% of women would not even be bothered to watch it.

Worldwide though, people are more aware than Pac and in terms of sheer number of people who are more aware of Pac than Mayweather, Pac p[robably outnumber Mayweather). Asia alone, which comprise 2/3 the world population, Pac is more popular than Mayweather simply becasue he is an asian and he is covered very well by asian papers (from Time Asia, asiaweek, Reader's digest Asia, even Tahi papers) as well as Nike Asia.

Thye face of Boxing is the person who covers more people rather than the trying to be myopic by using the US figures only, as obviously an American Silver medalist, or Gold (Hoya) will always be preferred over someone who come outside.

So basing on the number of black-americans alone, Mayweather should lord it over in terms of PPV over other fighters as they comprise 23 per cent of the total population.

The mere fact that a fight between two non-americans, where the other fighter is not exactly known outside of boxing afficionado's world and yet garnered at least 600,000 view tell you something.

What is the biggest fight ever in terms of PPV in American soil where two fightesr are non-amricans? That would probably be Pac vs. Cotto (Unless you consider Puerto ricans as americans) or if not, then Pac - JMM 2.

 

So for a black man to root for another black man against non-blacks is racist? What about Mexicans who root for other fellow mexicans to always win? Of course one is going to naturally root for the guy who is similar to themselves in ethnicity, they identify with them, especially if they come from similar communities.

Only disgruntle white guys who are upset that they can't be racist openly care about this or make a case of it. Mayweather just speaks his mind with little tact or consideration of the different type of viewers. (note: I am not generalizing, not all white guys care about this, only those who care double standards every 5 minuets. they are as worst as the black guys who call racism every 5 secs.)

I understand it, and it is true that it's a part of human nature. That doesn't mean it's right or that we should just give in to that nature. Everyone should make a conscious effort to reserve any judgments on a person until they have some kind of grasp of who that person actually is just beyond what they look like or where they come from.

 

Yeah, but you have no choice.
You can block it and pretend like it's not inside you, but you will always be more prone to cheer on people who look/talk/act like you.

I try not to judge either, but I definitely like when I see a fighter who speaks english address the crowd instead of interpreters.

And if you go for a fighterwho does not have your same color or ethnicity, you will be called traitor or turncoat. There is simply no middle ground.
