It is clear that Shane Mosley needs a very good gameplan in order to win the fight on Saturday.Mayeather is such a smart fighter, you can' win without a brilliant tactical approach.Unlike most people, I don't think that the overhand right is a solution against Floyd's shoulder defense. Mosley needs to: - throw create combinations, body and head. Not throw single punches. - be aggressive most of the time but also move away when Floyd's unloads with accrurate shots. - don't box Floyd in the centre of the ring, get Floyd to the ropes and throw hard body shots. - be busier than Floyd. Floyd only throws around 40 punches a round, Molsey needs to throw around 60. - answer back immediately after Floyd unloads his combinations -make Floyd fight, use his bigger strength to push Floyd around à la Castillo.and maybe revert to some dirty tactics in order to do that. Shane has the tools to do it.
I disagree with not throwing the overhand right since that's the biggest weapon Shane throws fluid and much more powerful than Floyd's biggest punches. He should use it to keep Floyd honest and at bay whenever he comes on a lil bit b'cause that's a natural punch for him - I think it can be effective since JMM hit him with the same punch over his left shoulder b4 being knockdown with a short left in the 2nd round ( check it out) - it gat to be a fast, fluid, overhand right or a short right hook like the one who made Vargas eye swell. Maybe he should throw a long right hand too but never paw with a jab to set it up... Stab him with a jab to the chest and combine it with a right blaster. Shane should save his legs instead of chasing this guy and give the judges the impression that he is the ring general. Use your own handspeed, stick and move sideways to make him come to you and then stick and stab him again on the countermove. If you gat him trapped along the ropes, break him down downstairs, two punches to the sides, but first jab him to the chest, don't just rush in like Hatton or keep your eyes on the floor like Baldo. Follow up upstairs with right hooks and short busting left hooks whenever he rolls to his right. Use your hook out of the jab to tag him at the distance, use ur flurry blinding handspeed to outspeed him and use Hatton's grab and clinch tactics to get a breather, tire him with your superior strength and probable superior weight come fightnight.
Great post. I hope Shanes statement about trying to outhink Floyd was nonsense. As all he needs to do is fight how he used to when he was down at 35. Throw punches in bunches and simply stay busy on the front foot. If Shane comes out flatfooted as he has been just throwing big shots he's going to get his head boxed off. He must stay on his toes as he used to and literally get busy.
Shane has to forget about KO'ing Floyd. If he wants to win he simply needs to be far busier than him. Shane is naturally heavier handed and like you rightly point out he cant use his jab as a range finder. He's got to use the jab to really set up some shoe shining combinations when Floyd closes up. This way Shane can slowly break Floyd down and even steal rounds. He has all the physical advantages in this fight and must make them count.
Good point. No fighter can outhink Floyd in the middle of the ring, so Mosley should not even try it.
I see that you favour a similar strategy. I disagree about the right hand though, that is what Floyd expects and it is very tough to land a clean one against his rolling shoulder defense. Of course, Mosley should mix in some right hands but he should not rely on it. Maybe after the body shots, the right hand will become more available later in the fight.
The problem is, Mosley doesn't have the legs and at SOME POINT in the fight will be flat footed.... then he'll get a pasting. I got 4/5 interesting rounds, then Mayweather picks him off. Too square on. Too easy to hit. And too willing to engage.
