Most Action-Packed Bennie Briscoe Fights

I think that the Nov 11 1972 title bout between World Middleweight Champion Carlos Monzpn and Bad Bennie Briscoe was very action packed, it was a 15 rounder, Monzon had to box and counter punch, instead of being the usual aggressor against Bennie. The two had met in 1967, as middleweight contenders, it resulted in a 10 round draw. Carlos had to survive the ninth round of this 1972 title bout, which proved that he had a good chin. Bennie made Carlos work for this win.

 

Monzon really showed what a complete fighter he was in this fight

 

Hayward was supposedly really good, but I can't find it.

 

Bennie had a really good win over Jean Mateo, a rough, tough, rugged, Frenchman , remember him ? strong looking with broad shoulders, he had a win Licata , I well remember the front page of Boxing News on the Thursday it went " Briscoe mauls Mateo " such times , also remember another title on the front page " The fighter who trades in fear " it pictured Bennie at a piano ?? hopefully some of you English boxing buffs will remember them .

Valdez 1 was better than any of those. If it hadnt been held on in island in the South Pacific it would have been fight of the year. It should have been. Ive never seen it but Briscoe-Gutierrez was supposed to be pretty exciting. Briscoe was dropped twice in the first and if I remember correctly he fouled Gutierrez to buy some time. Then he knocked him out in the second. Another great one was supposed to be the first fight with Kitten Hayward in which Hayward was way ahead on the cards for 7 or 8 rounds before Beiscoe roared back, pounding Hayward from pillar to post. Hayward won the fight but suffered a concussion so severe he was hallucinating in the dressing, shouting gibberish, and had to be taken to the hospital. He didnt fight for a year after that.

 

He bashed Mateo. Mateo had a bunch of knockouts and had beaten the hell out of Licata but he was a pretty limited slugger. Briscoe walked him down, battered him, and left him a bloody mess.

 

No, I meant Valdez 1. It was fought on Noumeau Caledonia.
