I remember Smoking Joe Frazier getting knocked down 6 times against George Foreman on January 22 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, that appeared very brutal, George even lifted Joe off the floor in one of those knockdowns. I won an easy $20.00 that night. But Floyd Patterson to me showed immense bravery on the night of June 26 1959 against Ingo. Floyd kept on getting tagged with that Ingo Bingo and got right back up, over and over.

You bet money on Frazier beating Foreman? My best friend's grandfather (may he rest in peace) said he noticed Frazier's decline, and said he was ripe for the taking and gave Foreman a decent chance, better than Daniels and Stander, but still thought Foreman wasn't the guy to do it.

neither 1 was more braver than the other. Both men were hurt badly. Both men have balls the size of a house

That is why I bet on George Foreman, the decline of Joe Frazier was noticeable, he took to fighting the likes of Terry Daniels and Ron Stander before fighting George. The guy that I won the $20.00 was sure surprised, he looked sad handing over the cash. He was sure that Joe would win.

A little before my time watching boxing Richard, but maybe it was obvious to a good few, yourself included, that Joe was not the force he was.
When we look back now at Joe, he really never was as good as FOTC Frazier. Not surprising really tbh, with what he put himself thru to get Ali.
And also his style of fighting, that s a good style when young and fit but takes a toll.

Joe had a similar style of Rocky Marciano, coming in on an opponent to land a punch, but having to take several punches. I really think that is why Marciano retired when he did in 1956, following the bout against Archie Moore in Sept 1955.

    Same here Richard.
Rocky must have had to put his body thru hell to keep in that shape and the shots he had to take!
Maybe a fight or two more and we'd have seen his record collect a L.
He got out the right time for sure.

I heard as late as 1959 following Floyd Patterson's title loss to Ingo that Rocky was in training for a shot at the title, but then changed his mind, imagine Rocky fighting Ingo for the title.

Even though the decline of Frazier was noticable (several media outlets picked up on it prior to the Foreman Fight), Foreman had not beaten anyone of note, that indicated that he would beat Frazier, let alone in the manner that he did. Were you concerned or had any reservations with your pick?

To hijack the theme somewhat, Finnegan's stand against Foster was note worthy , as was Davey Moore,s stoic defiance of Duran, one of the few encounters where I looked away, boxing at its not very appealing " best " its a difficult sport ! to defend when watching a fight like that. keep well.

People who don't follow boxing or like it, have a lot of ammunition at times to throw. To some you just can't explain what the attraction is in the sport. That it's more than just cracking the person in front of you. My wife s one of em, LOL

Well, yeah, but that's not near as dishonorable as hitting a seriously injured guy who has his back turned.
