The refereeing in that fight is the worst I have ever seen. He could have stopped it any number of times and nobody would have complained. Instead Paret and boxing got the result they got.
In recent years.. Vitali/Briggs Lebidev/Jones, grotesque Hematoma but not a one sided beat down like Vitali/Briggs.
It was almost as if he was hypnotized by what he was seeing and forgot the job he was supposed to do. Another fight though not on film was the first Tunney-Greb fight. I've read different accounts including Tunney's, and there is no way that fight doesn't get stopped in a later era.
Leapai has laid down some serious beatdowns against domestic level fighters, and Journeymen I know this... That bad? :think
One of the most brutal fights and one that took both fighters out of their career. Toney-Jirov. Just brutal brutal body punching. Berto-Karass was similar. I doubt Berto could come back from a sustained beating to his kidneys like that.
I was ringside for Toney-Jirov. Best big fight I've ever been to. Saw Toney-Adolfo Washington at the same place. Not nearly as good, but a pretty good ending.
