I was listening to a snoozer of a fight today. Sergio Mora vs Shane Mosley. Anyway there was a lot of things said during the whole fight from Lederman, Merchant and Lampley that was more entertaining than the fight. This is the quote that inspired this tread from Lampley " If any judge scores for Mora that judge is a candidate for a Lobotomy."
Probably Merchant - he came out with quite a few pearlers. Bob Sheridan could talk up a fight pretty good without indulging in blind shilling. His calls in Zaire and Tokyo are among the best imo. I also liked Sheridan’s background summations on fighters, professionally and personally - many of whom he actually talked to himself prior to fight time.
Jim Lampley really ? he is **** so many better Merchant is awesome because he is in there asking the tough questions ... but thats it for him Harold was as big as a boxing fan as it gets ,, very knowledgeable and Manny is the trainer, one of the best
Is Bob the guy who interviews Ali after the 'Caracas Foreman' win?* The "Africa, your home territory" guy? He's really good. * Caracas Foreman- a new new movie franchise is the style of Predator.
Yeah, that’s the one, the trimmer version of the Colonel before he hit the KFC hard. That was when Ali was still good on his feet for fresh humour. He replied to Sheridan, words to the effect: “Well, you keep talkin’ like that, we’re gonna come and cook you!” Good idea - You might want to put that movie franchise to Big George, I’m sure he wouldn’t be adverse to making a few more dollars than he already has. George can contact Arnie to borrow some movie one-liners to Caracas up <groan>. Lol.
Manny Steward #1 Lederman close second Lampley is more play-by-play but a good color guy, too. Merchant is my least favorite. He is a sure bet to ruin any broadcast with his inane pseudo-poetic ramblings. A perpetually 80-year old man questioning the grit of a fighter sticking in the pocket with some overdrawn metaphor is just a bad look to me. Larry Merchant is like if you put Moby Dick and a Nat Fleischer book into an AI and asked them to do color commentary for HBO.
Many years ago on another forum there was a PPV . Cant for the life of me remember who was fighting though. The afternoon of the PPV a truck took out the cable TV so I was snookered. I happened to mention it to a friend on the phone how mad I was. Well phone went that evening my wife said Its a woman to speak to you. A voice said Congratulations CJ you have won a free coverage of tonights fights here is your colour commentator. Now this guy was good at the end of the round Lady says Is your commentator ok I said he's great they ought to fire Lampley & have him She told the guy & I heard a laugh like a seal bellowing I said I know that laugh anywhere She said Darn it Tex you gave yourself away. That's how I got to meet Tex Cobb & his wife back then Sharon. I talked to them online on the forum & knew both were on the forum. He gave me commentary on four fights & chatted for ages after was great of him. My buddy had told Sharon I'd miss the PPV & he gave them my number lol. I said hey whos paying for this long distance call Tex he said The studio he was making the movie Raising Arizona at the time they'll foot the bill. Great guy Tex one of the best purveyor of great one liners I ever heard Was great of them to do that Great Memories too
Great Story! I have mad respect for Randall "Tex" Cobb! And this was way before he was inducted into the PBHOF in 1997. Raising Arizona is a classic.
Another vote here for Clancy, seems he was a well-liked guy from virtually everything you hear of him. I got to speak with Emile Griffith once and I asked him if he still kept in touch with Clancy. He got this huge smile on his face and said yes, then went on to tell me how wonderful he thought Gil was and how much he loved him.
Yeah my wife got mad at him about that scene in Arizona where Tex sees a rabbit grabs a grenade & throws it at it BOOM!!! fur flying. She said he was cruel lol He laughed & said " That dadgum rabbit wasn't hurt in fact the scene of the grenade going off was filmed a different day lol Great guy Tex
I will vote for my late Grandfather, doing his version of color commentary, from his recliner, while we watched some fights together on the television.
