Howdy JT, old Manny Steward really disliked most Heavyweights despite working with Lennox and Wladimir late in his training career. I once read him say something along the lines that most big guys are actually bullies who cant fight as they are used to having their own way in life due to most people being afraid of them due to their size hehehe. Something nobody could say about welterweights and the divisions below them
Dejesus 3 was Roberto's greatest performance along with the Leonard fight in Montreal in my opinion ETM. He was awesome. Those are the two fights I would show someone who wanted to learn about Duran. Cheers Mate.
You're stating the Jones Jr didn't fight on the inside, but neither did Tyson. He allowed him self to be held so much of the time.
Marvin Hagler Ezzard Charles Sam Langford Ray Robinson Roberto Duran Floyd Mayweather Jr Salvador Sanchez Carlos Ortiz
I pretty much agree with all of those except Mayweather. He didn't have the offense and power to finish fights decisively. A masterful boxer, without question, but not a complete fighter.
Duran's performance against DeJesus in their unification bout in '78 was something I was thinking about when I started the thread. By the end of his lightweight reign, Duran was a complete fighter who could do it all - box as well as brawl, fight on the outside and, of course, brilliantly on the inside and still had that knockout power as well as terrific defense. The 3rd DeJesus fight was a perfect example of that.
Duran actually boxed well with a degree if caution against Hector Thompson, really showed respect for Thompson's immense physical strength and only really went in hard once he'd started to hurt him. Thompson was a very good, dangerous fighter, he just had the work-rate of a hibernating tortoise.
Sumbu Kalmbay. An excellent fighter with good power excellent defense speed and boxing brain.A very underrated fighter forgotten but for boxing nerds like me.
Hi mate, my Dad knew Hector personally and I used to watch Hec train at Reg Layton's gym in Brisbane. He was an absolute gent outside the ring and as you said he was an unbelievably strong lightweight. Hec was actually involved in TWO ring fatalities, the first of which I believe took away his edge as a fighter. The second one basically finished Hector. Roko Spanja in 1970 and American Chuck Wilburn in 1976 both passed away after fighting Thompson. I was a ten year old kid and attended the Wilburn fight with my Dad. To this day it is still the worst thing I have seen happen live at a sporting event. Just terrible. Hec also had the misfortune of facing prime Duran and prime Antonio Cervantes in his two title shots. Nowadays he would have won an obscure alphabet belt n made good money defending it at home. Cheers Man.
