Yeah? and the Hearns fight was a perfect example of why he wasn’t unless you count being completely dominated by Hearns and then completely knocked out cold as a good example of a complete fighter that could do it all? A complete fighter should be able to defeat all variety of opponents regardless of shape or ability and skill. I wouldn’t give Duran much of a chance against Hearns no matter how many times they met.
Thanks for the great insightful post mate, very interesting and sad read. I knew about the Wilburn fatality with Hector but didn't know about the earlier one in my ignorance. It explains a lot actually, why Thompson seemed reluctant to let his hands go half the time. Very sad. Thanks for the post again, it's always a pleasure to read peoples first hand accounts of history.
Hi mate I know its not on topic re. the thread and I apologise to the OP but the inimitable Senor Pepe did a thread about Hector. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/hector-thompson-the-brisbane-bomber.430563/
Early on he was well rounded for sure. He looked sharp against Douglas even if Buster was a pound or 15 heavy.
I'm not sure that's the definition I'd use as that would more or less limit the number of complete fighters in history to one. The only guy who could truly do what you're saying is probably Sugar Ray Robinson. I think in his prime, Duran could do it all. But every fighter is likely to come across one fighter or style that they find difficult to overcome. For me, it's about the skillset the fighter has and their all-round game, rather than the opponents they've beaten or lost to.
So if he can`t beat Hearns {an alltime great} in his 4th Weight Division North he isnt a complete fighter? At age 33 no less?
Speaking for today's boxers, but I very much like Golovkin as a complete fighter. He's used just about every punch in the book, fights well from range behind the jab (Lemieux, Canelo) can KO a guy to the body (Macklin) with one punch (Ishida) or can plain brawl inside until the other guy drops or is stopped (Ouma, Brook). He's got power, he's accurate, he's got a chin and he's got stamina. He's got a very underrated defence, and watching the Canelo and Jacobs fights gave me an appreciation of just how good GGG can be defensively when he wants to be. His footwork allows him to cut the ring or to create space as and when required. Only thing I havent seen him do is fight an entire fight off the backfoot, which speaks highly of how strong he is going forward. /end commercial.
