Have to mention prime donald curry. The varied abilities he showed at championship level beating: taller technical boxer mcrory powerpuncher colin jones 57-1 running speedster nino larocca Classic defensive expert marlon starling Even shot, he varied his game from brawling and bludgeoning world class spoiler rosi to.... Outboxing the technical mccallum for 5.... Giving prime nunn all he could handle in a counterpunching masterclass for 8... More obvious picks 86-88 tyson Hagler Srr Leonard Ali Perhaps for a short time only and at a lower level lloyd honeyghan had everything (early 1985-summer 87) but it didnt last due to waning dedication and injuries but what he did havec was: Lightning fast reflexes, heart of a lion, one punch knock out puncher, superb mobility, chin, brilliant defense, slick boxing, world class brawler and body puncher, good skin-never cut, stamina.
I would not mention Ali to be honest. He was very versatile but technically he did a lot of things bad, he had no body work, he had no upper, low guard , his power was not above average, nearly everything he had in his arsenal were straight blows
Yes I had to include Sanchez. He died very young but he did alot in s short time. He has quality wins at the championship level. I saw him adjust his game and do what it took to win even coming from behind. When we talk about complete can't forget Ring IQ. Being able to adjust on the fly and think on your feet even when fatigue is real.
Just had a watch of Lopez vs Sanchez I earlier today... he was of the very last champions to truly shine in those final three championship rounds, and a fighter who I feel would suffer if having to fight in the modern era, with 12 round title fights. He truly shined late on in contests.
Not to sound to corny but there was something magical about those championship rounds. Feel bad for the younger fans who didn't witness some of those moments when we separated the men from the boys.
Hey Russ, ETM. They called em " the championship rounds " for a reason eh. The ability to fight well over those last three rounds was one of the biggest differences between " domestic outside the top ten " type fighters and genuine contenders.
I don' t think boxing has been the same since they cut it to 12. I understand the logic but I think it' misguided.
