Gustavo Ballas vs Rafael Pedroza Ballas was supposed to be the South American,,,,, Sugar Ray Leonard. Ray Leonard vs Ayub Kalule The Great Ugandan had no punch left. Labeled as a soft-punching fighter by Steve Gregory (Ray Leonard's stable-mate, and Kalule's sparring partner).
What disgusted me about that one was that Kalule got a measly $140,000 for losing his title and undefeated record, while Ray got at least a couple million out of it as the challenger. I don't care how big a star you are, if you're the challenger, you should not get more than the champion, unless there's a winner's and loser's share to compete for. Both Benitez and Duran got the lion's share of the purse for losing the WBC WW Title to Ray. (And yes, I agreed with Flash Gordon dubbing El Cholo "The Eight Million Dollar Tanker" after New Orleans.)
Lewis/Tua - With a hard hitting, much hyped top contender against Lewis I had hoped for an exciting clash of Boxer vs slugger but what we got was a one sided affair as Lewis put on a masterful performance and completely dominated Tua. De La Hoya/Trinidad - The controversial decision was the highlight of the entire fight. De La Hoya dominated the majority of the fight and when Tito finally got into the fight Oscar abandoned his boxing and ran. Very dissapointing considering this was meant to be our generations Leonard/Hearns.
Ayub Kalule had way too many tough amateur bouts, and had to wait 2-extra years to get a shot at the WBA Light Middleweight Title. Rumblings of him feather-fisting punches, due to sore hands, were out there. A very good fighter, but he could not put a dent in Masahsi Kudo, Steve Gregory, Marijan Benes, Bushy Bester or Mike Hallacy. He had an excellent right hand, but his left,,,,,,,,,,,no power. I thought Ayub only got $80,000.
Anticlimactic? Holmes' challenge to Oliver McCall. Larry doesn't even mention it in his book, even though he has a lot to say about every other important fight, even the Tyson defeat.
I read $140,000 in KO Magazine, Inside Boxing or International Boxing. Doesn't mean you're not correct. (At the time, I preferred the glossier production values of those publications over what the Ring and Boxing Illustrated then offered. When production values and decent B&W photography didn't matter so much, of course I went with Flash, like everybody else looking for incendiary commentary and provocative reporting.)
Bonecrusher did the same thing that Machen did vs Liston...but even more so. I still admire Machen and Smith for refusing to let themselves get knocked the hell out.
Muhammad Ali vs Cleveland Williams (who new his left leg muscle was completely gone) Donald Curry vs. Nino La Rocca (too much Italian Hype)
I think Holy-Tyson II should go down as the most disapointing fight ever. A $60million Superfight that promised fireworks, which ended with a bite, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of us all. :verysad
I'm not sure on the $80,000, but I thought that was the $ number. Always that the fight purse sounded cheap for Kalule. Would have liked to see Ayub Kalule vs Wilfred Benitez.
